Fly Fishing - Fly Tying

I am a junior in college studying fisheries and wildlife science in the northern adirondacks of new york, and I am trying to figure out a way for our fly fishing club to do some steelhead fishing. I didn't know if anyone had any good ideas on getting a few of us kids on some steel, or tips on how I should go about doing things. I think we should have between 4-8 people, and we all have pretty empty wallets! Also if anyone is in the area (lake placid or saranac lake) let me know, especially in mid to late april, I might be able to hook you up with some brookies or landlock salmon.

broke and steelhead ... they go well together.

1. get to salmon river ny - in pulaski, ny
2. get yourself some glo bugs (orange, white, yellow, pink)
3. floating line, 7/8/9 wt rods will be fine
4. indicator, 9ft of leader, small amount of tin shot and then 2-3 feet of tippet and tie on the fly
5. forget all the tappered stuff .. leader = 12 or 15 lb fluor and tippet = 6lb fluro.
6. there is cheap staying all around .. some places as little as 25 bucks a night ..
7. start up in altmar at the lower fly zone .. that is kind of a spot that everyone knows about ... but a good place to get in the groove .. if you hook a couple fish and feel confident ... well then, it's a 15 mile run to the lake ... and there are fish throughout .. fish it from altmar down ..
8. remember - it's winter - fish won't be in fast water .. more in the slower tailouts and many times right at your feet ..
9. have fun
10. there is mcdonalds in pulaski, so the dollar menu should do ya right

Also, pay attention to water levels. The rocks can be tricky at any time of the year. I would advise a wading stick for the first timers to the Salmon River. The first couple of times I went I almost went for a swim because the rock that I was standing on lead into a deeper faster water that about did me in.
The lower fly zone is open until May 15th. When were you guys planning on coming down? I have had a lot of luck during April and would be willing to lend some intel on the wereabouts of some chrome. I still need to checkon the the stream across from my house to see if the chrome are in thick yet. I am only about two hours from you.
Glo bug patterns are a sure bet. Don't forget about egg sucking leeches towards the beginning of april or black stone flies. Black beadheaded whooly buggers (and many color variations) work wonders also.
Bring extras of everything if you can because the river can suck up alot of equipment. Also, I know that it's not Micky D's but I would invest in a cooler and sandwhich meat and bread. Stewarts 2 liters are only .99 cents.
Oh yeah...bring your cameras! We ( at least I) would love to hear about your quest for the almighty chrome and see if you had any success or close calls.
Be patient. Sometimes the River Gods conspire against you and you go for long stretches without getting anything and sometimes it seems like every drift yields a hookup!
