Hey there,
Any of you guy's been to Panama flyfishing? I am headed there in a couple weeks and want to try on some roosters and dorado. Any recommended patterns and techniques would be appreaciated. I have been tying for a month now for this vacation but still have time to tie something special. I watched the video on this site "fly fishing for roosters" Now that is way cool.

hi,

can't speak directly to panama .. but was in baja mexico a few months ago and caught a bunch of dorado on the fly ... the game for dorado in mexico was much the same as the game for dorado here in the Northeast of USA .. basically, if you rent a ponga or whatever .. you will want to find anything floating in the bluewater .. it could be as small as a stick or a crab trap or a patch of seaweed floating or a piece of driftwood floating. The Dorado are known for hanging around or under any piece of floating structure. I do know that the Dorado tend to like the bluewater (typically deeper/offshore) as opposed to the green water .. so, get in the bluewater and look for any thing floating .. cast a fly at it and hang on, cuz if a dorado or two are there .. they will crush it almost immediately ... you will know pretty quick if there is any dorado around any piece of floating structure .. sometimes there would be 1 and other times more than 1 ... ... flies could be popper flies or bigger white mullet/deceiver type patterns ... pretty simple concept really, they are just hanging under or around these floating structures waiting for some bait to get come around it and then they ambush it ... don't be afraid to throw some bigger sized patterns too and really rip the fly across or through the water with some fast and hard stripping ...... a good thing, if you can, is find some sets of crab traps .. and hit each of the crab bouyes kind of like a golf course, mark which pots had fish and hit them every couple hours .. but basically you can plot a course and keep going back to pots that produced fish (after you have given it a rest) ...

as far as the roosters .. we were not targeting them .. we were targeting marlin, dorado and tuna a bit more offshore rather than inshore ... but, i do know that the flies that work are bigger mullet type patterns ......

Thanks Jeremy,
I was hoping to get some info like you have provided before I left. I am sure that the Dorado that you have fished will have similiar trates as the Panama fish. Got one more week to go and will be on to Panama. Part of my trip is 5 days on a 40 acre island that is surrounded by blue water. I have fished blue water 2 other times both with gear. I primarily fish Steelhead and Salmon with fly gear here at home. I am taking a 10 Weight spey rod to try on them, hope it works.
