Fly Fishing - Video of my son flyfishing solo for first time.

I hopped over the border into Germany today to see if any of
the Roach and Dace in my favourite stream would be inclined
to take a fly.
Pretty soon I encountered a whole bunch of them and tried to
get them on the nymph.

Plenty of fish.

It was early season so the water was very clear and cover was minimal.
The fish could spot me easily since I walked the higher banks, they would immediately move close to cover when I approached.
I had a short run-in with a Dace but that fish threw the hook quickly.

When I came to the third large school of Roach things got exciting.
The Roach saw me and moved towards deeper water near a deadfall.
Suddenly a Trout rushed out and nailed one of the Roach.
So I switched to a small streamer in order to catch the trout.
Unfortunately a couple of drifts of the streamer along the deadfall yielded no takes.

Further upstream a deep pool was located where I had done good business on the previous season.
With my polarized glasses I spotted some good size Roach in the pool.
The nymph setup failed to generate any interest from the Roach so I had to put plan B in action.

It would be very likely that the deep pool would have Trout in it so I tied on a fast sinkng polyleader with a small Magnus streamer.
After two drifts I saw the first Trout chasing the fly, to my surprise a Rainbow trout.
After a third drift the Trout took the fly and exploded into the air.

The pool was large enough to hold several fish, after a few missed takes fish nr. 2 was hooked.

On a previous visit I had some takes in the large pool below the watermill in town so I tried that place next.
On three occasions something chased the fly which I suspected was a small Perch.
When I finally hooked the fish it turned out to be a small Brown trout.
Having caught and released three trout I decided I had done enough fishing for the day.
With some warmer weather expected soon I think fish activity will be on the increase and before long we might catch the Dace and Roach on dry flies again.

Great pics and story as usual! Quick question for ya. What is a Roach? Around here we usually squash them with a newspaper!!

nice work marcel .. the stream looks to be in pretty good shape .. interesting and productive looking streamer there ... looks as though it is tied with dumbell eyes ... i like the red up top with what looks to be like olive bugger type body ... i'd like to try that pattern .... looks like one of those good trout flies that could be fished a variety of ways .. stripped fast, stripped slow, twitched along the bottom or even dead drifted .. my kinda pattern .. looks sweet.

great story Marcel, Got to Germany on the 3rd of April, Finished my German fishing course with the U.S Army M.W.R program, can't wait to sink some flies in these streams

The Magnus fly is originally a danish fly for fishing seatrout in saltwater, but as Marcel writes, it works really well in streams as well.
If somebody is interrested we have a couple of videos of how to tie the Magnus fly and variants of it on our website.

It is a very good pattern and if I would have any left in my box today I would not have blanked...
I do tie flies but only in emergency, the polar magnus is on top of my ordering list right now.

It was quite hot today, the algae bloom has started and the water is covered with all kinds of stuff falling from flowering trees.
I had a couple of takes in the large pool behind a watermill but the zonker streamer I fished was I guess too intimidating for the fish.

The highlight of the day was a rainbow trout that charged the zonker streamer three times as I fished a fast water stretch in the stream.
No solid hookup though so today I remained fishless.

Plan B to fish for Dace and Roach failed because they ignored every nymph I offered them.
There are still not enough insects around to get those fish feeding on top.
