Today I went on a scouting trip with HansF to our troutwater in Germany. The season starts March 15th. We wanted to check out the river for the coming season. The floods during the last year have altered the streambed at some places so it will taking some time to adjust to the new settings. Let's hope the meltwater will not ruin our first fishing day abroad this season.

Here a photo impression of the river at its current state:

marcel - river looks like it is in good shape now - hope it stays that way for you on the 15th - doesn't look like there is too much snow - so maybe the run-off won't be that bad....i still want to make it over there and fly fish beside that castle. Is that on the same stream? hey if you get a chance - post some of the rainbows and browns that you have gotten out of that river. i am curious of the size and coloring of the trout in that water system.

Castle hmmm. You mean the one on the picture below ?

BTW the castle will be revisited at the end of May. That castle is actually a hotel. We will be renting a nice little house from a local once again and spend four days fishing in the Harz region of Germany. We fish in the federal state of "Sachsen" which in the good old days was located in the GDR, former communist part of Germany.

The browns in the river at the castle are deep brown colored. A lot different than the gray/brown one that live in the stream just over our border. Our hatchery has new stock fish which should look a whole lot better than the current batch we have. It will take some years though before they are ready to be stocked. In the meantime they will just buy fish from elsewhere which most of the time means they will be coming from Denmark. In Denmark there is a trout hatchery on every streetcorner.

If you have serious plans about going to Germany let me know in time I will help you with getting a German State fishing license. Without one you will not be allowed to fish.

First fishing will be on the 18th or 19th at our home waters. Then on april 5 the Mohne river in Germany is on the menue. That could be interesting. If the fishing is not good we can always enjoy pork chops and a beer at the beergarden adjecent to the river. There are some other trips planned so I guess we will be busy again this year.
