Fly Fishing - Kitzbuhel; Austria

On day 3 we decided to do some exploring first before heading to the river.
Our permit mentioned a borrow pit we could fish, although we had no intention of fishing there we still wanted to see it
On arrival we noticed that the water was very clear and that you had to have a bellyboat in order to fish it properly, so onto the river we went.

We did take a look behind the borrow pit where our river flowed happily through the foothills, unfortunately that stretch was off-limits to us.

Since the river was still high and discoloured I mentioned that we should go visit the old riverbed behind one of the hydroelectric power stations.
When we arrived on the spot I saw that the otherwise present trickle had grown to a real stream.

These conditions just screamed for the conehead bugger and the heavy sinking polyleader.
At my last visit during low water I had spotted some chub and substantial rainbow trout
in that section so I had the utmost confidence to catch a fish.
After a couple of casts something big grabbed the bugger.

The chub looked very familiar, I could have sworn it was the same fish I had caught a month earlier but then again you never know.
My buddy Wiebe had positioned himself at the end of the pool and was putting a Copper John I gave him to good use.
He was catching one brown trout after another which was a signal that I had to switch to nymphing also.

I fished both with the Copper John and with a Stonefly nymph and also managed to get some browns from the pool.

The pool we fished was not that large and it did not take long before we had scared the remaining fish in the pool.
There where however plenty of other places to fish and so we moved on to another spot.

At the other stretch I fished everything from nymph, dry-fly to streamer.
The fish where cooperating and some nice brown trout where landed by my fellow flyfishermen and me.

The water was thankfully a whole lot better than on the previous days, a high pressure system would bring warm weather for the remainder of our trip.
The improved conditions also brought more insects on the water, besides a few green drakes loads of these smaller brown mayflies where flying around.
Even higher in the sky the red kites hovered over the river, we would see them almost every day.

The weather was fine and improving en yet again the fish where willing to take the fly.
We fished until evening and witnessed a nice sunset, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

nice post Marcel, how do the chub taste? are they comparable to anything, just curious if they are any good?
