tomtom and I found birds working a small school of reds smacking shrimp along the marsh. It was my first time seeing reds working bait like albacore. Beautiful to see.

nice! good to see ya out there working the reds ... i was talking to someone the other day and learned that redfish (much like stripers) were almost fished to "extinction" a couple decades ago .. it was my friend pete who grew up in florida and he said that as a kid he never even heard of fishing for redfish becasue the redfish populations were so depleted ... only until "recently" has the redfishing gotten to be so good and plentiful .. similar to the striped bass i guess? i remember as a kid, in rhode island, i would catch unlimited blue fish but a striped bass was a very very rare occurance ... and actually something that i personally never encountered .. and nowadays, striped bass are very abundandent ... i wonder if the same thing applies to the redfish in north carolina??? point being ... if infact the species is really making an impressive comeback like the striped bass have ... you may see lots of things in years to come that "you have never seen before" ... such as redfish feeding like albies, for example ... any thoughts????
won't be long to the albies are running good in your neck of the woods .. they are starting to trickle in here in the northeast .. but, bonito is still the name of the game ... soon to be replaced by the albies ... you know the drill .... i really would love to get down there and fish for the albies with you guys this year .... good hearin' from ya seth ...

I think the NC redfish fishery has the potential to be one of the best. Right up there with Florida, South Carolina and Louisianna. But the NC marine fisheries won't let it happen. Nets in these estuaries are everywhere. These "flounder" nets bycatch result in a shit load of reds. Until they remove the nets I don't see it improving beyond what it is today. Now, if they wake-up and realize the problem at hand...watch out....because it will be great. We have it good right now...but have so much potential.
