Fly Fishing - Flyfishing Germany

Yesterday some friends and I visited the Möhne River in the Sauerland region of Germany.
When I looked from the bridge at the end of the stretch I saw rising fish so I fished with the dry fly for a while.
I had no luck with the dry fly, most likely the fish where chub.

I worked my way upstream fishing a nymph and finally hooked a brown trout in one of the deeper pools.
Before lunch I managed to catch another little brown.
Some trout where rising but there where not many insects on the water.

In the afternoon I met up with my friends who had caught some nice fish with the streamer.
After lunch I fished a deep part of the river with streamers and had three nice fish in a short timespan.

I then moved into the part of the stream where trees made casting a challenge.
There was quite some fish activity and I hooked one very pretty marked brown trout.

In the evening I worked my way up to the beginning of the stretch and had a few more strikes on the streamer.
The insects where gone and there was no surface activity anymore.
I ended the day with six brown trout, five of them where of good size.

Awesome fish! I am amazed at how different these brown trout look from each other and especially from the brown trout I have seen here in the U.S. I guess that it's pretty amazing what a few hundred years (75-150 generations) of parallel evolution can do to these fish!

And you were amazed at the differences of your brook trout!

Congratulations on what looks like a great day! Does this make all the work of the German license worth it?

I am equally amazed at the differences between the coloring of the trout.
My explanation for this that the river is obviously stocked with different strains of browns.
The hatchery from my German club also had different looking brown trout
over the years.
The old batch where quite dull colored with only black spots.
When they switched to a new supplier the fish where bright colored with nice red spots.

As a visiting foreigner you can get the German license usually without much problems.
Once you stay in the country for work or if you are in the armed forces than you are considered resident and you will need to pass the exam.

I had a discussion with the president of the German club about this and mentioned I was willing to follow a training course to pass that exam.
That should be interesting, when the new courses start I will get a notification from our president.
It will be interesting to find out exactly how tough this exam will be in real life.

Way to go! Beautiful fish! Looks like streamers are pretty universal. Congrats again and great pics and story!

The spots on that last brown are awesome. It is pretty amazing that fish in general, even of the same species like a brown, adapt their color to match the given habitat. Great stuff.

I have dug up the adress of this club in Wiesbaden.
This was the result of using the German Google website so
I do not know what that club is all about.
At least there is one e-mail adress listed which you could try
for contacting one of these guys.
Maybe they might know a club that is even closer by the
place you live

How does one go about getting a fishing license in Germany if you live in the United States. My daughter and son-in-law are being stationed at Ramstein AFB. My son was stationed there and we visited and there were alot of nice streams that I would like to fish in.
