I was in the fly shop the other day browsing through the fly bins looking at the new selection of flies that they had gotten in. Midges were abundant so it must be that time of year to load up my fly boxes with winter patterns. Those of you who live in the west know that the winter fishing can be great and we can often catch fish on dries on certain days. I would like to try some new patterns this year and put some more selections into my fly boxes. Any suggestions? These are my go to winter patterns.

olive micro may
glo bug
roys special midge emerger
red, black and cream midges with a shuck (don't know the name we call 'em shuck midges)
Renegade

Disco midge UV, pearl, red, black #18-22
Jujubee midge #20-22
Befus glass bead midge gray, black #18-22
2 tone brassie #16-22
Barr emerger flashback #20-24
Biot body midge emerger #20-22
Ray Charles gray #20

Awesome, Thanks guys. I see that Joey is speaking to Colorado and lunchbox is speaking to Utah. So, for an East Coaster like me, who does maybe 1 trip out west per year in the spring ... this will be a huge help. I have a question. Which of these would be good "any time of year"? The difficult thing for me when coming from Maine is that I just don't typically fish alot of midge and size 20 stuff. I have, however, learned the hard way .. that what works in the EAST does not necessarily translate to the WEST.. especially in spring when a size 18 is considered a BIG fly! So, all of the flies in the list that you mention will definately help me be less confused when entering a western fly shop and trying to decipher amongst the overwhelming amount of midge and "tiny" patterns that I don't know too much about. I can tell you this, I was totally amazed when I did find "the right" fly on my last trip .. I think it was a size 20 disco midge or something. I got tired of getting ZERO fish on some of my BIG (size 16) east coast nymphs and finally bit the bullett and put on 6x and a size 20 disco midge or whatever .. and BINGO, I was hooking fish left and right ...

So -- What would you guys recommend out of these small midges, flies and nymphs or in addition to these listed as "Must haves" in my box .. I do know that in the summer hopper patterns and bigger stuff works well .. So, I guess I am just looking for "must have" TINY stuff, because that's where I lack the most knowledge. Thanks.

Jeremy, if I were to pick 5 flies for tiny bugs for spring, fall, and winter here out west on tailwaters to match midges and baetis it would be the following....

1 - Zebra midge (in red, maroon, black, grey, and olive) I prefer to use either nickel or black tungsten beads instead of gold.

2 - Barr emerger baetis flashback - one of the best blue wing olive nymph ever designed thatnks to john barr. Will also work as a midge pupa.

3 - Disco Midge - super easy to tie, use dubbing on the head and wrap the krystal flash body with very fine silver ultra wire to make it ten times more durable.

4 - WD-40 - great little blue wing pattern or midge pupa. I like mine tied either gray or danville 6/0 flymaster olive brown thread. 8/0 UNI olive looks too green. I also prefer flashback.

5 - Pheasant tail (non bead for deep nymphing or tungsten beadhead for dry dropper only) what else needs to be said, its a PT!
