I have a Tibor, Everglades model, fly reel that I use for salt water species. This model I use with an 8 or 7 wt. rod and line for Drums, snook, Sea Trout, Stripers etc. This reel has a good finish and solid frame although it should be washed with fresh water after use to avoid corrosion. The reel has a disk drag. Like any reel, attention to the disk drag under heavy use may be necessary. I've used a graphite powder on the drag and this seems to be all you may need to do, so far it has done the trick for me in terms of keeping the disc drag functioning well. The only problem I have noticed with this fly reel is when using multi tip fly lines. I found you have to take off some backing to add this type of fly line, which I use for Stripers, to avoid rubbing the line against the frame of the reel. For overall utility, easy to disassemble for cleaning, weight and style I'd give this reel a solid 7 out of 10. Does anyone else fish Tibor reels? If so, what are your thoughts on this or other models of Tibor reels?

I have never owned one, but I have used them on occassion in the saltwater .. as a few of my friends fish them. An expensive piece of equipment, no doubt. I can't give alot of valuable feedback because i haven't used them enough .. but i can say .. when i have used them, they certainly feel like a rock-solid piece of machinery and when an albie is ripping line off one of these reels (at least the one i was using - can't remember the model name?) .. you feel as though you are in complete control of the fish.

Tibors are fine reels alright. I plan on getting one this year. Here's a tip. Tom Shadley told me when you store your reel to always make sure the drag is set to its loosest position. Smile

I use the Everglades for Bonefish,Seatrout and pike fishing. And the Riptide for Salmon,Permit,Barracudas and small Tarpon.
I am not big on matinance, but the reels still works... after 6 years Wink

Tibor makes one hell of a bombproof reel. They are a time proven design that have landed some of the largest fish in the world on rod and reel. If I were a die hard saltwater guy I would use nothing else. The one disadvantage to the Tibor is in the cold. The only problem that I have seen is the cork disc drag plate freezing up and turning to a sheet of ice, allowing the reel to free spool. Because cork is a semi-porous surface, water gets into it, freezes, then you have no drag. This is not just with Tibor, but just about any cork drag reel out there such as Bauer. Then a better option would be one of the synthetic drag reels such as Nautilus, Ross, or Lamson/Waterworks. If you're not big on maintenence, then you can send it back to Ted Jurrasik and they will make it as good as new for ya.
