With so many fly lines on the market and so many new coatings and linebuilding technologies, it's good to share information. Friends are planning tropical gettaways and relining their rods. I just loaded up Rio's Tropical Clouser WF9F and walked accross the street here in Naples to the pond.
I cast this line with a lead-eyed Clouser on a 9-foot Snook leader in a moderate 15 mph breeze and my initial grade is an "A". The final grade will have to wait because durability and how long a line stays "feeling new" is very important to me. My initial reaction is enthusiasm.

Rio has thoughtfully put loops on both ends in this series of lines for easier rigging which is a plus. The loops are welded to what Rio calls its Powerflex core. The Clouser Line is Rio's "all-around" line for Snook and Reds and they say it has a long-lasting tropical coating. The coating is the result of what Rio calls its "Extreme Slickness Technology". The coating sure feels super slick now! But most new lines do.

Rio makes a Camo-tip that I will likely buy before fishing Permit and Bones. I am sure I could deliver a heavier Crab fly just fine because I was reaching out 60-70 feet with reasonable accuracy and turning over the Clouser fly with more ease than I expected. The Clouser Taper is truly quick-loading as they say. This line balances a heavy fly at short distances and I enjoyed adjusting my energy down slower to load the rod and make a short, accurate cast.

This line really floats high...perhaps due to what Rio calls, "Agent X Technology" which they use to make all their floating lines. Sounds very jamesbondish. What I found was that I could pick up a surprisingly large amount of line off the surface.

When I first came down to South Florida I didn't know anything about tropical fly lines. My casting sure wasn't what it is now. Most, if not all of what I learned has first come to me from friends here on flies and fins and other local anglers and guides who are constantly trying out new stuff. I really like that there are so many choices with fly lines. I'm also anxious to try the Tropical I/I full intermediate sinking line that has a transluscent green tint and a 9.5ft AquaLux clear tip. (I'd use it for Tarpon.) Has anyone else used this line or one of the other Rio Tropical Lines?
