|
|
| It seems like fly fishing and tobacco go hand in hand. In the past I have dipped off and on for about 5 years. I quit one winter, but the following spring, something strange happened. Anytime I’m on the river it seems as though tobacco (dip, cigars, etc.) has enhanced the experience. There’s nothing like popping in a fatty and just getting in the zone when nymph fishing, or striking up a fine cigar with clients after successful day on the river. What is everyone’s favorite tobacco product while on the river? Am I the only one that feels like tobacco adds a bit of ruggedness to the experience as a whole? |

| This is an interesting topic. It isn't too often these days that you hear praises for tobacco products. Your perspective though I think is a very common one. Almost all of my fly fishing friends and guide friends partake in some form of tobacco or another on the water. Many of them either smoke or dip all the time and doing it when fishing is just part of their normal routine. A lot of them though, myself included don't actually use tobacco on a regular basis but when you get out on the water, something happens and it just seems to go along with it. Whether puffing on a backwoods cigar (or cigar of higher quality if offered) or an occasional smoke while relaxing on the bank looking for risers, or kicking back on the flats, i definitely have been known to partake (I don't ever chew however, but plenty of my friends do). I know I am not the only one, as many of the people i have fished with over the years also enjoy it. |

I do smoke and dip while fishing, I'm trying to quit both but I have found that sitting on the bank after a long day fishing and smoking a corn cob pipe watching the sunset is about as close to heaven that I will get on this earth! |

| Interesting, I remember one fall day out in the Boise river when I was a high schooler, couple of by buddy had some dip with them, think it was copenhagen snuff, I had never tried anything like that, so out of my curiosity, I ask to see and look at it, feeling like a rebel at the time, it did look like the grinded pork meat that came in a round circle can as well, and it smell alright, so i took a big one, my buddies say the bigger the better, it was hard trying to get it between the gum and lips and I think I swallowed half of it, if not all of it, needless to say after 2 minutes, my fishing days was over for that day, as I was chumming the river after that. yes I laid at the bank sicker then a dog, just throwing up my lunch and feeding the trouts and white fish. Yes to this day I still remember hearing the laughs echoing through my head from my buddies. |

| You aren't kidding, My fly fishing mentors all either smoked or dipped. I used to get down around the bend and pull out my can of Cope when they weren't looking. Now it's a right of passage on the water, hard not to do it in front of my son though. A big fat dip when in the treestand waiting on a deer is nice too. |

| I recently quit smoking. The only time I crave a smoke now is when I'm fishing. |

| This is an interesting topic. I, myself, am not a regular tobacco user. Yet every now and then when I go fishing with a buddy of mine, we almost always have to stop off at a remote convenience store in Maine and pick up a pouch of redman chewing tobacco. Something about the stuff just seems to go so naturally with fly fishing, not to mention the great taste! anyone else enjoy partaking in loose leaf chaw while hunting for trout, or any other game fish for that matter? |

| Nothing beats casting to a rising trout or swinging a streamer to a steelie when your lip is full of dip. I prefer skoal mint when i hit the river or a cowboy killer sittting stream side and resting after a hard day of fishing. After releasing a fish the first thing i do is pack i lip in apprecation for my hard work and the fishes. |

Couldn't have said it better myself. I love those post landing fatties after the first catch....as well as the add on that comes with each subsequent one. For those that forgo the tobacco, I hear sunflower seeds are decent. |
