|
|
Hello to all.
I'm new here names Glenn live in Wilmington NC, completely addicted to fly fishing.
Question is I'm looking for a 12wt rod for tarpon-shark, etc.. I'm leaning towards G.loomis since I have a cc glx 8wt and love it. But I don't think I can spend so much for another rod I wont fish as much. Does anyone have any opinions about the experience, and regular cross current 12wt models. which are much cheaper.
Thanks in advance
Glenn |

| I haven't fished the g loomis experience but have cast them a little in our shop and they are a good value rod. The g loomis cross currents are a great rod for the money, the only problem is that they are 3 piece rods which makes them more difficult as a travel fly rod. If the 3 piece aspect doesn't bother you then they are a good option. I will tell you that I haven't fished either one, just cast them though so maybe someone else out there has actually fished either one and has a more thorough opinion? |

Thanks for the reply kory_K
I'm not totally opposed to a 3 piece rod. I haven't traveled with one yet other than in the car. How difficult is it to travel with? |

| I actually travel with a 3 piece rod all the time. I have flown with one countless times to national and international destinations over the past several years. I have always carried it on (actually I usually have 3 of them, one in a double rod/reel case and one that i duct tape to the outside of that case) and i carry the whole contraption on. The reason is because I accumulated many rods over the past 10 years when 3 piece fly rods were mainly what was made. Now I have added several 4 piece rods, but these 3 piece are still some of my favorites. Anyway, the biggest drawback is that i haven't been able to find any standard luggage out there that will fit a 3 piece rod into it while a 4 piece will fit very easily. Now with the additional costs of baggage both for weight and additional pieces this is even more difficult. What are other travelling anglers out there using? How do you deal with this issue when travelling? |

I try not to gear pimp too much but this product has paid for itself many times over for carrying fly fishing gear safely: http://www.sportube.com/pages/skis_two_pair.php
I use the double ski tube by sportube whenever I'm flying with fly fishing gear. It can fit a ton of stuff: multiple rod tubes, waders. wading shoes, reels, nets, boxes, vests. vises, etc....
Sometimes I fly with it as checked baggage or I send it ahead via FedEx or UPS shipping services. |
