PostPosted: Sun 03/01/09 4:01 pm    Post subject: Steelhead Leader: 15 Ft. Weighted Leader - Help? Reply with quote

I am going to the salmon river in upstate ny this month for steelhead. We are using a guide and he wants us to buy 15 foot tapered weighted leaders. He wants us to attatch them to our rio clouser 9wt floating line then run a 4 foot leader of 9lb tipet to it.Here's my problem lol!I can't find any tapered weighted leaders that are clear (like he told me to get). All the leaders i find are black and not tapered.I am figuring that 4 feet of tipet is not enough to fake a fish without a clear weighted leader.I am
also worried about how it will cast over all.I need to get a type 3 sink and type 6 sink. Can anyone point me in the right direction please. This is going to be my girlfriends first time flyfishing too so i really want everything to go well. She bought a lefty kreh 9wt 2pc fast action flyrod and i was also wondering if anybody has tried his series of flyrods yet? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for reading
my posting.

Sincerely,

Ricky

I use Rio's 15' poly leaders. They are not clear but when 4-8' of leader is added the fish won't see it coming. They are tapered and come in a variety of slink rates. They do have clear intermediate and floating but those aren't the kind one needs when swinging flies. I hope this helps. Malinda's fly shop in Altmar has them as do others up there. If you can't find them ask the guide where to get them. Good luck

You may want to call the guide back and clarify with him. I have never herd of a clear sinking leader. i know of many intermediate leaders that are clear. When he spoke of clear he may have been referring to the tippet. He may not want you to use a green colored tippet or something. If you do come across a clear sinking leader i would be interested in learning more about it. please keep us informed.

Definitely clarify with the guide exactly what he wants. As others have said, there are sinking poly leaders (which are really just substitutes for sink tip lines) and typically the clear ones are intermediate (which are sinking, but just very slow sinking). In addition to intermediate they make these in type 3, type 6 and type 8. Both Airflo and RIO make these and many shops have them. Airflo calls them poly leaders and RIO calls them versi leaders.

One thing I wanted to mention was in regards to your girlfriend first starting. I assume you are talking about TFO fly rods or Temple Fork Oufitters Fly Rods as that is who makes the rods with Lefty Kreh's name on them. There are some very good models in the series especially for the money.

A few things I would keep in mind with her:
1. The rod is fast action. fast action rods are harder to learn with because they don't load as easily as more moderate action rods, but if you get a heavier line on them or a more aggressive taper line she should be able to feel it load. The RIO clouser fly line is an aggressive taper so you should be alright
2. If you set her up with a 15 foot sinking leader on the end of the fly line and then add another 4 feet of tippet for a total of 19 feet after the end of the fly line, she is going to have a very difficult time casting it.

The guide may have you fish a technique (very likely) that doesn't really involve a lot of casting though so you should probably be ok.

i gave up and bought a change a tip system from cabelas.i use the rio and airflo change a tip system for trout and it is so much easier.i like the rio better than the airflo.i bought them both for 50 bucks at the world wide flyfishing expo.cabelas has their change a tip system for 50 bucks in the bargain cave right now so i picked up 2 in 9wt.i hope it's good line.i know they had a problem b4 with the connection loops not fitting through the guides but they have since fixed that.wish me luck on this one lol!my girlfriend seems to pick up every hobby i have with ease so i hope she does with flyfishing too.if not then i will fit her into one of my 9wt mod/fast rods till she learns better control.i know it sounds nuts but i bet women learn fly casting easier than men.the reason is because they listen better, most of them have never seen flyfishing or have gone fishing so they don't have any bad habbits and they are more (how do i say this without sounding like a moron lol) into presentation.i taught my ex fiance on the provo river in utah.it took me a matter of 30 mins to get her roll casting, false casting, casting distance and basic control of her cast.well i left her alone and she caught over 15 rainbow.a guide who was getting out of his boat was simply amazed and asked her how long she had been fishing for.she asked him what time it was lol! i tried teaching my buddy (mike) how to flyfish and it was like watching a not so intellegent person using a big fly swatter! i never knew you could get so many wind knots in one leader lmao!so what do you guys think?

thanks for reading my posting,

ricky

thanks again for all your feedback Smile

One more thought after thinking about it...your guide might actually be having you swing flies Very Happy (my favorite way to catch steelhead) if that is the case, then you will be casting. Keep in mind thought that those tip system lines (which i love as well for both single hand rods and spey casting), are designed to be fished with the line that they come with. It sounds like that is what you bought, so you should be all set. If you are swinging flies, I wouldn't fish it attached to the end of a standard fly line like the clouser it won't cast right.
