Any suggestions from the collective minds of the F&F followers. Planning trying out a local lake/185 acres, bellyboat, for saugeyes, etc.

Hi,

I personally had to look up what kind of fish a saugeye is, I had never heard of it. A few flies and fins friends over on Facebook saw this post and suggested the following. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

-> Rick Wilson at 10:30pm June 8
clousers!

-> Finn Jensen at 12:55am June 9
Zonkers and any flies with long strips of rabbit. Tie them on tubes insteads of big size hooks and keep them simple

Also, because of the Saugeye's relationship to Walleye, I thought that this post here about best bets for WALLEYE FLIES might help you too.

Pheel

I have fish for them on Flies in the Ohio rivers and was very sucessful using a clouser minnows, white works great, and yes these species are related to the walleye family and are consider a great and tenacuious fighter like their cousin the walleye.

If you tie your own flies then go with the pattern of shad or minnows in that certain waterways as these fish tend to be picky takers depending on their diets, but they are great to catch on light tackles, the Sauger that I have caught near Brandenburg, Kentucky were not that big but they put up a good fight and the best time for them is usually right around this time as the water starts to warm up, they tend to get more and more active due to schools of new minnows coming out of the protective area and braving the outer edge of ponds and lakes to venture into deeper pool, just look for signs of minnows and tried your luck with a clouser and hope you get yourself a nice one. I though I was one of few that go after these fish on a fly rod..Easterners kind of look at me funny as they got their Big Cat rig out of the truck and here I am with a fly rod, on the Ohio river.. Interesting post. I had never heard of a saugeye either, it seems as if there are a never ending number of species to pursue with a fly. I had to look them up and it sounds like they are another hybrid species that fisheries biologists have come up with between a sauger and a walleye. It sounds like everyone here has some great suggestions in regards to how to catch them, I just thought I would add my thoughts on the subject. I remember another post a while back about wipers which are also a hybrid (between a striped bass and a white bass). It is interesting how fisheries biologist create all sorts of hybrid species to fill certain niches both for recreation and to see what effect they have on undesirable species. Sometimes the fisherman is the benefactor of these experiments like in this example, but sometimes messing with nature backfires. In any case, hope you have some success catching them!
