Dear All,
I am new to this forum and pleased to be able to receive advice from you and read you numerous and interesting discussions.
I will soon start salt-water fishing as my job will get me into the carribbean area (Colombia and Panama) - poor me - and I want to gear up for saltwater without getting ruined.
I currently own a sage xp #7, but this is clearly too little for going after barracudas, jack fish, tarpon and I do not know what other surprises I could meet there.
Used to eBay, I have been looking at sage rplxi, echo, orvis, and scott rods, but since here in Switzerland there is little market for this type of gear, it is hard to have an idea and harder to test.
It would be great to have some advice on rods and reels available, at affordable prices (the sage was purchased on eBay at a nice bargain price). Thanks in advance!
You should use an 9 or 10wt (i use a 10wt) is a nice wt for your primary saltwater outfit. You can use your 7wt for some spookye fish, like little Palometas (Permit little cousin), and for the Peacock Bass fishing is a nice wt, so don't leave it in home.
I really like the TFO Pro Series (i now, just Medium/Fast) and the St Croix Imeprial (Fast Action), on ebay you can find great deals.
Use salt water TROPICAL lines.
The reels, for salt watter at least 150yrd of 30lb of backing, and large harbour, remenber down here is hot, standart harbour make the fly line take some memory and generates entanglement.
I'm looking for a good deal om reels too, if you find one post it please.
Here7icon is right. A 9 or 10 can be a great everything rod. The main thing to remember is that you can not own too many rods. A good number of rods to have is around 17.
