It's hard to admit, but this year's Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River just hasn't been too good for me. This is my first experience at 335 CFS, and while the wading is easy, the fish have been nearly impossible to find for me. So, I'm breaking down and looking for a guide for the first week of December. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Jim Ray

Jim,

I'd highly recommend David Severson. He strictly fly fishes the Salmon River and surrounding tributaries. Dave has been part the Flies And Fins crew for as long as I can remember, and when it comes to steelheading the Salmon River and other lake Ontario tribs, he's our go-to guy. In addition to his skills as a fly fisherman and knowledge of the fishery (having been born and raised in that region), I'd recommend Dave for his professionalism and because he is a class act. Through the years, many people (including me) from Flies And Fins have fished with Dave ... and he comes highly recommended. He is also connected to a pretty tight group guides that he fishes with on a regular basis, and for trips that are bigger than 1 or 2 people they all work together and do a great job of spreading out and working hard to get people into fish. Dave has been instrumental to my steelheading knowledge in that area. Dave's username on this site is "waterwhippa" .. you can also reach him by checking out his Salmon River Specialists website. To get an idea of his style, you should also check out the chapter that he wrote for the "Flies & Fins Fly Fishing Book" - The Guide & The Fisherman - Good luck, hope this helps, have fun!

Jim,

100% agree with Jeremy. Dave is a super guy and a great fly fisherman. I have learned a lot from him and feel lucky to have him as a good friend. Dave knows the Salmon River and the surrounding tribs very well. When things are tough on the big river (as they often can be) dave has a few sneaky spots up his sleeve. I cannot say enough about Dave Severson. Great guy, Great teacher and Great friend. Good luck and have fun.

I have guided fly fishing most of my life, ran guide services, hired guides, worked with countless different guides and been guided by a number of guides and I can tell you that Dave is as good as they come. He is from the area and lives there year round and fishes the Salmon river in his free time all the time in all water levels and all water conditions so knows it as good as anyone. I would highly recommend hiring him, you will not be disappointed.

if you are having a bad year steelhead fishing then you need dave. i have fished with dave a couple of times and never had any trouble finding fish. he is passionate about catching steelhead, knows the salmon river and all the holding spots.
i have had experience with another guide on the salmon river and was not pleased with the results. dave defiantely will get it done for you.
