DIY from shore....
You cold go down Highway US41/Tamiami Trail and fish the canal that runs parallel to the road in sections closer to Everglades city. THere should still be some bass and snook to catch in there, especially once it starts to warm up a bit. Small minnow patterns will work... I like small dark puglisi minnows tied barely longer then an inch. Small dark muddler style flies work great too.
If the peacock bass start bouncing back from this cold weather then you could fish the many lakes and canals in teh Kendall and Miami Lakes areas. Use small yellow/chartruese/orange clousers and strip them FAST.
You could also tie some red and brown berry looking flies and try to sight fish big grass carp that reside in teh canals. Drive around looking for a tree thats dropping berrys and big giant grass carp under them slurping berrys like trout to dries.
Not much DIY on the salt side here since the massive freeze we had, otherwise I'd tell you to wade the flats by Mathesson Hammock park to look for bonefish.
A 7wt or 8wt should be plenty for all these situations. If you want to get sporty, bring a 5wt. Good luck. |

Hi, I am flying to Miami next Monday 15th. I have booked guided fly fishing for 3 days in Key West. My question is about salt DIY between the 190 km drive from Miami to Key West. I noticed that Benzo mentioned freezing period... like the rest of the Europe, so any forecast how things will develop towards the next week? Whatīs the type of fishing in mid March anyway. I read the previous posts about Keys and Jeremy has been giving loads of great information. Thumbs up!
My recipe for the vacation is simple, slowly cruising, fishing and accommodating my way to the tip. One week in total. Should I know some regulations regarding the DIY on the area.. such as common policy etc.
Thanks!
Superb forum. |

| The only way to DIY in the keys is to simply DIY. Use your judgement, utilize public access ( or not so public access) wade out, rent a kayak and make it happen. Put your headlamp on and go late nite snookin' around the # channels in the lower keys. Thats all I can give you. |

I was down in the Keys during the freeze. It put a hurting on the bay side. However there are still bones cruising the flats on the ocean side. There is a very accessable flat in Lower Matecumbe. Also Long Key State Park has a nice wadable flat, there is an enterance fee for the park.
The Permit were not yet on the flats when the freeze hit, they are just now moving in and I here it's been good fishing. Tarpon that were there when the water temps dropped also got hit, however the big tarpon had yet to move in.
Bahia Honda Park is another great spot to wade. There are channels to the North and South of this beach were you'll find many species of fish.
This is a beautiful beach and worth checking out.
Sandy Morets fly shop in Islamorada (at the Green Turtle Inn) is a great spot to stop for local information. Good luck to you. |
