Never dropped one in a stripping basket but have dropped one in a flybox and put one a little too close to my waders one time.

I have actually done this twice. The second time wasn't nearly as memorable as the first. It has been a long winter in Maine. I book a flight to Florida to fish. I get to Key West area. Park rental car. Wade way out on flat. Basically swim cross a channel to a big rock keeping my hat, smokes, etc. in one hand out of the water, so as to not get them wet. I get to big rock. Get situated and ready to start fishing. I see some sort of fish way off in distance. I strip tons of line off reel. Finish a smoke and put it next to me on rock. Wait patiently. Been awhile, so I make a cast to wet my line and be ready for when I see the fish again. Feels great to cast cuz its been so long - so I really am gonna lay a nice long cast out there. I double haul, forward haul and let it rip! WOW! ZING! the line RIPS out there beyond my wildest dreams .. way out .. deep into the channel and sinks to the bottom. Game over. swim back. wade back. walk back to car. get in car. take a nap.

(the cigarette had burned my fly line - cutting it in half - resulting int the entire first 40 feet of it to shoot into the ocean) - needless to say, that sucked.

Ha! I tend to be a minimalist at heart. Its not to say that most of the time I go on a trip, I leave without my huge bag of crap. I usually get to the streams or salt and laugh at all the gear I have with me because I almost always only carry a box of flies, one extra leader, one spool of tippet, and forecepts (I use my teeth way more than my dentist would like). It's always that one time I refuse to bring all that stuff I don't need that I do something stupid. Over the summer I brought one reel with me and decided to drive up the road to check out another location. When I got to my next location, I realized that when I broke down my rod, the reel was ontop of the truck. Needless to say, I never saw that reel again. For someone who prides themselves on readiness and dependability, I sure do a lot of stupid things...
