I am by no means an expert on the subject and will keep an eye on the answers as I am going to S. Carolina to fish for Reds. Last year I used numerous crab and shrimp patterns to include crazy charlies, Brown and blue crabs and some a shiny gold crab pattern, this pattern worked well on Paris Island. Hopefully someone with expertise will respond and we will get some good info.

If it looks like a shrimp or a crab they will usually chase it down. Throw some gold flash in that will help. Copperheads, spoon flies, clousers, seaducers, kirks rattle rouser are a few pretty popular ones. If you tie for grass flats throw a weed guard on and don't put to much weight on otherwise it will sink too fast. Hook size and shape will vary slightly I think 1/0 is what i usually use , just make sure the hook is pretty stout because the hook will be bent even after a few 5-7lb reds.

Materials:Bucktail,Craft fur,Copper/gold flash, root beer chenille, some yarn for crabs, epoxy(for epoxy heads if you know how), silli legs(always add some excitement to a fly), lead or bead chain eyes, grizzly hackle (for claws/shrimp legs), some heavy mono for weedgaurds.

Most of my red flies are sort of a brownish or olive color especially when the water gets murky in the summer.

I can throw some pics up If you want when I head back to CHS this weekend, I'm in the mountains right now

Hope this helps.

I've had great success down here in MS with a red over yellow deep minnow with either red are pearl krystal flash. The local fly fishermen call it the fire fly. Simple yet effective.

It all depends on where and how you are fishing for them. Are you going to be site fishing tailing reds on shallow grass flats or mudding fish in deeper water with pot holes, or clear water redfish on sandy light bottom? You also want to see what kind of baitfish there feeding on. Sometimes there feeding on mullet or pinfish and other times there feeding on minnow or pilchards (white bait). Other times there can be a shrimp hatch and that’s all they want and nothing else.

I'll take some pictures of some different patterns that I tie and like too use on redfish in Florida Bay (Flamingo) and maybe they will work for you.
