I have several rio versitip lines and quite like them. I have fished them mostly in freshwater for trout and steelhead. I have used them on both single hand and spey rods and they make it very easy to change depths without worrying about carrying extra reel spools or reels. Because there is a loop to loop connection, some people don't like them and it is true they are not as nice to cast as a regular line without the loops but in my opinion the advantage of having 5 lines in one outweighs that disadvantage. For spey casting i really like them because you rarely even get the loop into the guides so you don't notice it is even there. Another disadvantage of the loop to loop connection is the "hinging" effect where the loops meet. This is much more of an issue with braided loops since they are much softer than the surrounding fly line. Rio versitip loops have a "welded" loop that is made by doubling over the flyline so it is much stiffer which dramatically reduces the hinging. All in all I think the versitip is a great line when you need to have sink tips of varying sink rates such as in steelhead or salmon fishing, lake fishing or streamer fishing for trout.
