List of Ways an Individual Can Help Make a Difference with the
Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill Ecological and Economic Disaster

The following organizations have been identified as providing some ways of helping to deal with the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill. We provide this list without any intention of endorsing these groups. We have researched neither the groups’ validity nor their percentage of contributions that is reaped as administrative costs. The list is informational. If you use this information, you do so with the understanding that you alone are responsible for identifying an organization that suits your own personal interests.
Help by identifying wildlife at risk and oil that has come ashore:
The Deep Water Horizon response team is looking for help in identifying shoreline and animals affected. Oiled wildlife should not be captured but instead reported at 1-866-557-1401. To report areas with oil ashore or to leave contact information to volunteer in the affected areas, call 1-866-448-5816.

The following two groups attempted to organize volunteers to clean up the beaches near Pensacola prior to the landfall of oil.This pre-spill clean-up is intended to make the upcoming oil spill clean-up easier and more effective. Although the original date has passed, these groups may be continuing to organize volunteers.
Operation Clean Sweep has been organized to remove debris from Escambia County beaches before the oil spill reaches the shores to prevent additional contamination.
On Pensacola Beach, the cleanup will be noon today [5/2/10]. Volunteers should meet at the Gulfside Pavilion at Casino Beach.
On Perdido Key Beach, the cleanup will be noon today [5/2/10]. Volunteers should meet at the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce.
Anyone may participate. Please bring garbage bags and gloves.

BRACE, United Way and First Call for Help are organizing volunteers for cleanups if the oil reaches shore. Call [850] 595-5905 from 1 to 5 p.m. today [5/2/10] to register to volunteer.
• Those who plan to volunteer and handle petroleum-contaminated materials need to be trained. Registration is required for a four-hour health and safety training class. Classes will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Pensacola Civic Center. Call [850] 595-5905 for details.
• In Santa Rosa County, to volunteer for beach cleanup or register for other opportunities, contact the Volunteer Reception Center operated through Help Thy Neighbors in coordination with emergency management at (850) 686-6646 or (850) 287-1352.
