Folks,
We'll be heading up to NB for our honeymoon in late August and are hoping to get in a day of fishing. Anyone have any tips or insight on what to expect for fishing conditions. We were thinking of hitting the Miramichi, but are flexible. I'm a little worried it will be warm and between runs so salmon fishing may not be an obvious choice. I'd be perfectly happy fishing brookies as well, but don't know if that is an option typically offered up there. Also, I don't remember if we are allowed to ask on here (I apologize if I shouldn't), but can anyone recommend a lodge to hook up with? or at the least an area to focus on?
Any insight is definitely appreciated. My wife to be is a novice who will go along because it makes me happy, and while I'd be cool swinging streamers all day for 1 or 2 or maybe 0 fish, I don't think I'd put her through that if that is what we can realistically expect at that time of year. Best not to start marriage off on that kind of note!
Hi Ken,
First of all congrats and good choice on spots for the honeymoon, NB is Beautiful. I live here in NB and fish as much as often as I can get out, which never seems like enough. Salmon fishing in August is good, you shouldn't worry about missing runs as there are plenty of fish throughout the system that time of year. The sticky points with salmon fishing are the regulations for non-resident fishers (guides required, etc.). Your best luck would be to get into a camp somewhere, there are plenty around, as they can set you up for better chance of success. Atlantics can be the most frustrating yet rewarding fish to cast to. Most of the pools throughout the system are private so even finding access to the public pools is time consuming in itself.
As for Brookies: just like in Maine there are plenty around. Just about every little stream and river you can find brook trout. Is there a particular area you will be travelling to in NB? The small issue with SOME streams and rivers in the province is that non-resident anglers require a guide to fish them (potential salmon rivers). A list of these rivers and other information for non-resident anglers can be found on the NB Department of Natural Resources webpage.

To be honest, that is what you can expect any time of year when fishing Atlantics, other than the April-May kelt fishing when you can oftentimes hook up 10 or more times/day.Anybody I know would be thrilled to hook 1 or 2 bright fish every outing....it just doesn't happen these days unless you are fishing the best of the best big $$ private water that holds fish almost all the time.
Gander pretty much nailed it.The Miramichi system sees fresh runs of salmon from early June right through til season's end mid-October.August can be great fishing if the water levels are good.Low and warm water is near impossible to hook up unless you have access to a springfed/coldwater pool. That's the biggest challenge throughout the entire season is timing your trip to coincide with good conditions....impossible to do months in advance, but most good outfitters have access to low-water pools that willl fish decent even under the most challenging conditions of summer. There are several good reputable lodges on the Main SW Miramichi between Blackville and Boisetown to choose from that command top dollar, and a few B&Bs and local guides in the Doaktown area that I could reccomend that would be less expensive, but with access to less pools and more dependant on favourable river conditions. If your interested,I could pm you some info?

Thanks for the info guys. It's helpful to get the straight poop. Maybe Miriachi is best saved for a boys trip...
Sooo... as it turns out, we've changed plans and are heading to Iceland instead. Any chance anyone can offer some thoughts on trying for atlantics there?
$2000-$3500 EUR/week for full meal deal(add app. 30% for USD)
Just a suggestion, but if Iceland is not already set in stone,Nova Scotia is a bargain for non-res anglers. No guide required,Cape Breton Highlands/Cabot Trail is beautiful, scenic getaway...popular with honeymooners,B&Bs etc.,and good August fishing on the famous Margaree?
