I just got back from Idaho to visit relatives, and to offer them a housewarming present, I bought them an "Essence" 5/6 outfit. They wanted to learn how to fly fish, and teaching them was part of my "rent" for staying at their place.
After much research based around my finances, and advice from my local fly shop, I purchased the Essence package for them.
My relatives were busy for the 1st couple of days, so I took it with me on my adventures.
The rod is a 4pc with alignment dots, nice guide raps, and a comforatble halfwell grip.
I was AMAZED at how nicely this rod cast a fly. I nymphed it, threw streamers, drys. The only thing it struggled to throw were big, heavy, conehead streamers. But my fast action 6wt struggled, too. A typical, new flycaster is not going to be throwing these types of flies, anyhow.
The FlyStart reel came preloaded with line AND leader. The reel has a nice, adjustable drag. Both had a nice balance when casting.
Did I mention how well this rod cast?!!! Effortless when dropping a PMD in a lane. Takes a double-haul to send a streamer across a 70 ft river. When I was nymphing, it rolled 40ft of line, leader, Thingmabobber and 2 nymphs easily.
I am impressed!
This is the package for your buddy who wants to get into flyfishing and learn to cast without breaking the bank. This is perfect for a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) rod outfit.
Both the rod and reel have a lifetime warranty - especially great when you buy this package for your child. You just know accidents happen...
I've got a pink 4wt (yes! pink) on order for my daughter.
