Looking for some advise for a new, affordable, all around fishing set up. I'd like something that can handle trout fishing in northern new england, bass fishing in MA, and possible steelheads in NY. Any advise would be helpful.
Thanks,
Roy

I'm far from an expert on this, but i think the new packages put toogether by Ross Reels and by TFO would be tough to beat. You get a matched rod and Reel with the appropriate line and backing for around $200.00. I think they come with some type of warranty and are pretty good quality. I think your biggest problem is going to be finding a set up for trout and bass, probably a 5 ot 6 wt, that will handle steelhead where you are usually using at least an 8 wt. Maybe some others have better ideas on this since I am not a steelhead fisherman.

I suggest getting a 6wt with a fighting butt. I think a 6wt will be your best all-around option for the multiple species you list. If you find a rod with a fighting butt, you will be able to handle the larger species a little better. Get a reel with a large arbor as well. This set up will be on the heavy side for small trout, but you will appreciate it when casting larger flies to bass and larger trout.

I picked up a Redington SuperSport 6wt with fighting butt at Sierra Trading Post for around $200 and I love it.

You might also check out Albright. They have good gear at very affordable prices (because they sell direct, not through 3rd party retailers).

I'm not trying to spam here, but here are the links to the above mentioned suggestions:
