Not exactly easy period, but no crowds, good visibility, solitude, selective approach-stalking and targeting the bigger ones...
much more rewarding... for me at least... |

Dax, it is a difficult question to answer. Below I'll explain why,
1. If I am fishing chalk streams with a lot of vegetation (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is all in Europe), I prefer a cloudy weather with a bit of rain. Why? Fish are not very spooky and more rises will occur. My favourite time to fish bigger dry flies
2. If I am fishing big rivers, which are really wide, then I love fishing in winter. Usually in winter there is no snowmelt yet, so the water levels will be low. You can hardly catch a brown trout in winter but rainbows are a great pleasure. You wade in, cast in the middle where the water is a bit faster. You do nymph fishing often using heavy nymphs and potentially strike indicators
3. If I am fishing medium size rivers, then my favourite times are in early spring and autumn when I can do all sort of fly fishing. The weather I prefer during this periods is dry, not so hot.
4. If I am fishing small streams or smaller rivers, my favourite time is summer, a hot day would be fine. I would fish early morning and late afternoon on small dry flies. |
