Just curious if any of you guys have a favorite fly fishing quote. One of my favorites is from Henry David Thoreau.
“many men go fishing their whole lives without knowing it is not fish they are after”. |

Not a "Fly Fishing Quote" But My favs from Jaws, when Quint is in the meeting room and he says.
Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycocks. This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin', no tenderizin', down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing. |

I'm a big fan of this one from the comedian Steven Wright:
"There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like and idiot." |

But for a more literary one, I like Zane Grey's:
"Surely the best virtue of fishermen is their hopefulness." |

"there are enough miles of bright water...to support the fly fisherman's deep-seated need to believe in infinite possibilities"
"only those become weary of angling who bring nothing to it but the idea of catching fish"
"angling is somewhat like poetry, men are to be born so"
"the love of angling increases with the lapse of years, for its love grows by what it feeds on"
"no angler merely watches nature in a passive way, he enters into its very existance"
"knowing a river intimately is a very large part of the joy of fly fishing"
"the gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent fishing"
"...the air above him was singing with loops of line that never touched the water but got bigger and bigger each time they passed and sang"
"...the things that fishermen know about trout aren't facts but articles of faith"
"I still don't know why I fish or why other men fish, except that we like it and it makes us think and feel"
"an undisturbed river is as perfect as we will ever know, every refractive slike of cold water a glimpse of eternity"
"fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it"
enjoy and tight lines

even a fish wouldn't get into trouble if it kept its mouth shut.
don't know he said that first but my dad has repeated it several times. |

These two are perfect.
"hooksets are free"
"never met a fish I didn't like"
or,
when it's raining....
"the fish don't care, they're all ready wet" |

How about the old favorite of mine----
"All fisherman are liars except you and me, and sometimes I'm not so sure about you" |

my favorite is "10 % of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish. "
If this is true I have often wondered what to do with the 90% who are in the way....... oops what if i am one of those who are in the way. |
