Fly Fishing

Today it was warm weather and I opted for a nymph session in
some of the urban ponds in the city I live.
My target species where shiners but I could not spot any activity
of these fish nor could I get any bites.
Only in the evening I saw some scattered fish in the surface.
Still fishless I decided to extend my fishing day and visit a pond
that I knew held many fish.

Pike central

This time I fished a small streamer to catch a yellow perch or two.
After half an hour something grabbed the fly and began to move,
it was something big so yellow perch was out of the question.
It was a big pike, now that was fun on my 4-weight trout bum.
With no bite guard and trout strength tipped it was a tricky fight.
Especially the part where the big pike went airborne was fun.
I had to counter several runs and jumps of the pike and to my surprise
I stayed connected with the fish.
Things started to go wrong as I beached the fish.
I went for the gill grip but the pike went for alligator tactics and
started to roll.
The tippet snapped and the pike moved slowly into deeper water.
I was shaking of excitement at the shore and pondered that nobody would believe me catching a big pike on such a small trout rod.

So I decided to stay and try for another one.
I fished the shores of the pond and finally went back to the spot
where I caught the pike.
To my surprise the streamer was intercepted almost at the same spot where my previous fish hit.
Again a pike was shaking his head and racing towards the middle of the pond.
After several runs I thought the pike was ready to be beached.
With the utmost care I manoeuvred the pike to the shore and grabbed the fish behind its gills.

Nice pike on the 4-weight.

A quick picture and the fish was released again.
What a magnificent end of this Sunday.

Hi Marcel
Is perch in season now in NL? Two years ago I was fishing around Utrecht just about this time of year, and it was still not perch season. But that is one nice snoek!

It is actually close to the end of the season for pike
and pikeperch.
Next month we can only fish with flies equal or
smaller than 2.5 cm so that means nymph or
dry fly.

The pike where nice and did put up a proper fight.
These first one made some nice jumps, both fish made
some nice runs.
I will have to wait untill June to pursue these fish again.
Never flyfished for pike in summertime but I guess I
will give it a try this season.

great report. Those pike seem fun. We don't get them as big in ponds like that. Ours are more river fish and we usually catch glimps of them while fishing for smallies as they bite our tippets in half.

Marcel, nice work. That must have been one hell of a fight on the 4wt. Beats a shiner any day in my book. I love pike on the fly. We have a couple great rivers here. They run the creeks in the spring. I have had them jump out of the stream and up on the bank during battle. They are a blast.
