everyone has crazy theories... and patterns .. here is the simple solution for me

1. bonito - don't like baby bunker to much - love silver sides -- and typically they eat "bigger" sized flies than the albies ... believe it or not .. a hook with sparse white buck tail and a little silver flash down the side .. .. of course the epoxies and surf candy like the pics of jesse's will work too.

2. albies - they tend to like the baby bunker more than the bonito and also the silver sides too ... so cary chart. and white enrico p. type baby bunker flies .. (never fowl) and hold up well ... bunny flies (but be careful cuz they tend to fowl allot) .. typical epoxy and surf candy ...

3. bluefin - tinker mackerel patterns 4 inches in length is a good bet .. (from some recent info .. i have gathered .. in addition to the stuff flyfish4tuna mentioned in the "bluefin tuna flies" post..)

... so -- that is the run down -- but like anything else there are no rules .. just guidelines ... so basically i would have the following if you are getting into bonito/albies (white decievers, bunny flies, epoxy surf candy type stuff, hook with white buck tale sparce with a little silver flash down middle and the ep. baby bunker style flies in char and white or olive and white or both .. bingo .. your good to go

(that is just my opinion --- i am sure there are many others that would agree to some extent and disagree to other extents and add in or subtract some of my suggestions ... so, i am not saying that IS THE DEAL .. i am just saying .. thats the deal for me.) take what you wish from it ... good luck.

Jeremy brings up a good point with "fouling." When fishing for albies and bonito it is super important to have a fly that you can aggresively cast into the wind that wont get hung up on itself. There is nothing more frustrating then waiting 10 hours for a couple fish to bust infront of you only to blow your chance because your fly tangled or "fouled" in the heat of the moment. I love bunny flies so I tie down a piece of 40lb mono to the bend of the hook and super glue about a 1/4" of the rabbit hide down to mono. This way the rabbit strip tail cannot twist around the front of the hook. Good luck..
