CURRENT LEADERS AS OF SEPT 18th - SHORE DIVISION

ALBIE: 14. 63 lbs..... (That's gonna be tough to beat!)
BLUEFISH: 11.09 lbs
STRIPED BASS: 40.19 lbs.
BONITO: 6.35 lbs.

Matha's Vineyard Derby - 2006
Well the New England Saltwater scene is in full swing. Every fly fisherman on the East Coast looks forward to the fall. The bait bings to migrate and the fish get on the bait! And, if you love chasing the Albies/Bonito/Striped Bass/Bluefish from shore or boat ... than you know about the Martha's Vineyard Derby. http://www.mvderby.com ... Every year, all my saltwater fly fishing buds from Maine pull together .. they put away the boats, big offshore tuna gear, they forgoe the Maine striped bass, they forgoe trout and salmon (which they do anyway .... they are not big fans of small fish ((anything less than 30 inches)) ... they are a salty bunch .... anyway ... the house is rented .. the beach passes for driving on the island beaches have been bought .. the crew is together .. and the Derby is in full swing .. I have been looking forward to this trip since I left Martha's Vineyard last year ... This has really become the one serious time that I am able to really synch up a trip with my Maine saltwater buds ... After the spring Striper Run .. everyone kind of goes there own way .. I chase trout (they hate trout) and fish Rhode Island allot and they start fishing way off shore for Giant Bluefin Tuna .... BUT .. come September and the marthas' vineyard derby .. everybody puts aside their differences (other than a few late night fights) and pools together money to rent the house and get the vehicles on isalnd and get huge amounts of food and beer and soda and all that stuff .... and we fish hard! very hard! non stop actually .... albies/bonito from sun up until sundown and stripers by night ... sleep comes in very small doses ... It is so much fun in so many ways .... and certainly a tradition not just for us .. but for fisherman and fly fisherman from all over the world and from boat and shore SINCE 1946 ... we only fish the Shore division ... we don't use boats ... all fishing is done from foot via access from the beach with 4 wheel drive .... fun stuff... check out http://www.mvderby.com .. it is the BIBLE of the MV derby and updates daily with total fish caught for each species and the leading fish for each division and species ... ok ... maybe i'll see ya on the island... if you see a dude totally out of his mind, running up and down the beach (sometimes miles at a time) foaming at the mouth and casting frantically ... that's me! Very Happy

Great post Jeremy! That's what it is all about. Those are some serious size fish man! 14.63 is the one that has me drooling! This year's Albies seem to be quite large wouldn't you say?
