Im new to this site and also to steelhead fishing. I found this site last night and can already tell im going to love it. Anyway, Ive only been steelhead fishing twice but im already addicted to it. Im interested in learning any new tactics to take on steelies with and Ive heard a couple of people taking about swinging streamers for them. I was just wondering what exactly this ment and what were some good patterns to try (im mainly fishing in P.A). Thanks in advance for any advice! Back to top Shaq Newbie Joined: Feb 22, 2005 Posts: 136 Location: Adirondacks Posted: Thu Oct 19, 2006 6:25 pm    Post subject: I have found that any patterns that have 2 colors, contrast each other, keep the colors in the pink/purple orange/black chartruece/black and white/pink using materiuals that have motion themselves, rabbit hair, marabou, flashabou and krystal flash, these are good starting points. I find 2-4 inch long streamers the best. Not only were they fun to tie but I fished them for some broodstock atlantic salmon and had a blast catching some pretty decent fish, my biggest being about 22-23inches. I cant wait to try swinging them for steel on one of my trips to NY Caleb Back to top PennsAds Newbie Joined: Oct 20, 2006 Posts: 2 Posted: Fri Oct 20, 2006 2:16 pm    Post subject: If your going to be fishing in PA and are looking at swinging some flies you got to get your self some Egg Sucking Leeches and Wooly Buggers. Ok now for the colors that seem to be working. In the egg sucking leeches we have been getting them on black and chatruese with a silver body and black and light roe with a gold body. It seems that we have been doing better with the orange this year than previous years but who knows. As for the wooly buggers black and gold bead heads and olive and gold bead heads have been working fairly well. Don't be affraid of going a little big with the leeches we tie them on size 4 and size 2 salmon hooks. Now how we swing them in PA we use long leaders with WF floating fly line then attach a 3/0, 7, 5 sinker depending on depth and current about 2 1/2 to 3 feet up your line. Then cast the streamer upstream at about 11:00 o Clock then mend your line upstream once then let her drift then swing. Don't be in a hurry to pull your fly out at the end of the drift Steelies love to smack a fly while it hangs at the end of the drift. Well keep that reel screeming and good luck. Mabey some of the bigger NY creeks later in the season. We were fishing around the lower sections of the creek, I've heard some fish had made it up to folley's campground, but I can't confirm that. Speaking of swinging flies we were catching fish on olive with gold bead heads and the fish were hitting at the end of the swing and smashing it. I had two fish hit so hard they broke off 8 lb tippet. There didn't seem to be a lot of fish in the stream, but you could manage a few. We talked to others that was fishing Walnut and they said there wasn't any fish to speak of in the lower sections. I am new to fly fishing and even though i live so close, because of my age I just dont get that many oppurtunities to fish and as far as good places I couldnt really help you but to my knowledge there almost eveywhere in some numbers Im most looking forward to this winter when i'll have x-mas vacation and reduced crowds beacause of the snow.
