Out west Steel head fishing is done almost exclusively with a spey rod. There are plenty of fish, but there is also plenty of water. The only real way to feel like you covered it properly is with a spey rod. When you finish with a run you know you covered every square inch of it and if there is a player you will have found him. I have used it a bunch all over the Pacific North West and Canada and it works great (check out www.fliesandfinswest.com for video and posts). Not only that but learning the casting techniques adds depth to your single handed casting. For one you can use those spey casting methods with your single handed rod, but you also become a better fly caster all around becuase of the mechanics you pick up.
