Message: ???I am new to this fly fishing thing...love it!!! rapidly becoming an obsession...? what do you use for those conical things I see inside of the home made stripping baskets??? I have made a very functional basket however i am lacking the cones or whatever else could be used. after using the baskrt i made i am assuming the purpose of them is to help keep the fly line untangled and knot free thank you your site is A1!!!...Willy |

hi - the stripping basket i use is one that i purchased .. they are kinda cheap (20 bucks or so) ... so i did not personally go the "make it yourself route" ... however, i have allot of friends who do ... to be honest ... i am not exactly sure what they use to manufacturer the seperators ... because all the baskets i have ever bought obviously come with them .. maybe someone else on this site knows how to make some 'home brew' seperators...
but i can answer one question -- yes those cones inside the basket are for seperating the line - so that when you strip it in ... it does not get all tangled and end up as one huge birds nest ... an absolute necessity .. cuz. from personal experience there is nothing worse than having busting fish infront of you and being unable to cast because your untagling a huge rats nest ... here is another tip ... put watter inside your basket .. i find that if the line in the basket gets to dry if gets tangled with itself easy and i am bound to get all sorts of little knots and birdsnests when the line is supposed to be shooting out smoothly through the guides ... all i do is just dunk my basket in the water and get about 1/2 inch of water in there ... and i am good to go ..
good luck ... if all else fails .. you can probably find a cheap stripping basket online .. cya. |

home brew seperators are 1/16" holes in the bottom with some 150lb or 200lb 3" sections of mono leader glued in the holes.

| the commonly used stripping basket in south africa is a plastic shopping basket (it comes standard with slotted holes) with cable ties inside to prevent the line from getting knots. If you need more info let me know |

Plastic basket with weed wacker string glued in loops on the inside bottom make a decent home made stripping basket.
The one that Orvis sells/sold that a came with a CCA membership has been my favorite all around stripping basket. |
