Flyfishing and Tying Journal is a great magazine. The Summer 2006 issue had an article by Ken Hanley titled “Long Rods, Jetties and Rocks” which discussed the pros and cons of Spey in the Salt. One big problem they discussed was the cutting of your flyline on barnacle covered rocks and the cure was the ever more common stripping basket. That part was interesting but the real interesting thing was when Ken Hanley asked Simon Gawesworth about the right rod to use. Here’s Simon’s answer.

Quote
“You certainly want a light, fast-action rod – not too long, say around 12 to 14 feet, and designed for a 9-weight line, which would be most useful, though this depends on the size of the fish you target. For small one to three-pound fish this would be overkill, and a 7-weight outfit would be better, though it won’t get the casting distance. A 9-weight is a great all-‘rounder for the stuff I do on the East coast every year for stripers and blues.”
End of quote.

I just came across that article while searching for something else and when I saw it I thought someone out there might find that blurb interesting.

In the new Saltwater flyfisherman magazine Lefty comments on Spey rods and their use in the salt. He basically says although not ideal for all saltwater fly fishing situations the spey rod does have a place. Its place is with the suft fisherman as the length allows one to cast longer lines as well as keep line out of the breakers.

I dont know how accurately I quoted Lefty but thats the just of it. I couldn’t justify spending $5 on that swag magazine for one paragraph.
