Fly Fishing

I'll be in Islamorada this Thursday. At this point I have a Silver Label fly line from orvis on my 9 wt. Do I need a salwater fly line? If so do you have any recommendations? I would like to spend like 50$...not really willing to spend 70$ at this point. It'll be flats stuff...mabey backcountry.

Hey Steelie good luck on your trip! Was it you who asked me stuff about the Keys earlier? I was curious as to what your final plans turned out to be. Question

A good shooting line abosolutely MAKES a fly fishing trip that much better and well worth the investment. Matter fact, as a rule I'd sooner buy a new line than even think about upgrading to a new rod. I'd spool up the old one and take it along for a spare and buy a high quality salt line...a floater. Maybe a Triangle Taper by Wulff or an Orvis Redfish line. Friend Dave (hedrush999 on f+fSo) recommended them both to me and I have each. Good all-purpose tropical salt lines. Just a matter of preference, but they both cast well and you'll appreciate the slick feel of a new line right off. I'd say with your rod that the Redfish line would load a bit quicker, being heavier at the front end. I get a bit more distance from the Triangle though.

So are you going to DYI the Islamorada flats? Did you find a guide? Who? Where are you staying?

YES!!!.... Nice Steelie this trip finaly arrived....french fishermen never said "good l..k" to another we say "shit", caught them all.

As Marsh advice, you need absolutely a tropical salwater fly line at less a saltwater fly line. Not regarding on the prices I like the orvis wonderline bonefish and the scientific anglers too. A good brand (nice price/quality) I've also used is a Scierra bonefish but I don't know if they are sold in USA.

Thanks to both of you. Yeah Marshal it was me who asked you some questions earlier about the trip. We'll things turned out for the better for me. we were originally planning on 1 day flats 1 day wrecks and 1 day offshore. Meaning only one day with the fly rod for me! But we have now decided to do 3 days on the flats and backcountry and I am pumped! Were staying at Holiday Isle in Islamorada. My dads buddy has a friend in Islamordad who's gona hook us up with a good guide...so everythings pretty much lined up! Im gonna go look at some lines today... no school...! My rod is a medium fast so i dont know that loading it will be a problem...we'll thank again

For your medium fast action of your rod, it will be Ok I've fished bones with a lake rod for 7wt/8wt medium fast action and the only stuff no great was the cork that start rolling after a bunch of rushs.
I've share fast and tip action rods with people only used with soft to medium action and them cast pretty bad.
On my point of view it's better to get ready on flats with a rod you know and his action, rather than get a fast action and tip and don't know the rod and mistake all the accurate cast bones gives you.

you may want to tie some of these....

Tan Calf splayed tail, 2 k-flash ea. side, palmered brown hackle over twisted root beer mylar...bead chain or lead eyes...2 grizzly, ea. side and one brown hackle tip tied in front, extending to end of the fly. Bonefish Bob's in Islamoada can give you good local pattern suggestions.

"FYI, Bonefish Bob's is CLOSED. Next door there's a shop calley Ichtyophile which is mainly a fish gift shop run by a Florida Fishing Guide, Rich Mitchell.
The other place would be Islamorada Outfitters which is in a new place......formerly the "Green Turtle" Inn. The guy that ties the flies there is Dave Tong.....he's a cool guy and very knowlegable."

Hey ,
I just got back yesterday from fishing the keys. We had some really windy weather and the water was very dirty. Saw a few bonefish but didnt get any solid shots. Lots of barracuda and sharks around though. I also wasnt fishing with a guide, youd definately be better off with one. It also might be worth it to go offshore. We went out last week in some of the wost weather they have seen all year and still did very well. When we left the water was clearing up and the weather seemed a little better. New jersey you had me scared there for a minute with the weather. but we'll be with a guide for at least one day. Im good with 'cuda too, but bones are what i really want.

Marsh we'll just check out a couple shops tommorow and go from there as far as my line and flies and all. we'll i have to go. I'll let you know how it goes when I'm back!
