Fly Fishing

What is the digital camera you use for fish pics and why? I'm sure this topic has been covered before on this forum, but it seems to me that the technolgy has been changing fast so maybe its time for some fresh information.

I'm shopping for a new one and am looking for some suggestions on what features are actually practical on the water. BTW, the one I'm considering at the moment is an Olympus waterproof.

Right now I use an HP R817. I just got my replacement after i dropped my other one in the raging nanknek river. I really like the camera, it isn't waterproof but i don't really like the waterproof cameras, the ones i can afford sacrifice a lot of features i have on my HP. I like all the extra features because i do lots of photography besides fish pics. I have always liked HP because they make affordable cameras with tons of features. The thing i like most about my camera is for it's size it has a great optical zoom, 5x is very uncommon for a camera this size. Really comes in handy if i want to take a pic of a bear far off or something.

I use a Canon 30D, it is a digital SLR which I have two lenses for, one of them is a 70-300mm telephoto lens. I love it and swear by it, there are two problems; one is that I am carrying around $3,000 dollars, that is actually two problems, finding that much money and then dropping it in the drink. The second problem ( or is it third) is the weight, I carry some standard goods which weigh me down. I don't carry it when I am fishing, only when I go with somebody who is fishing purely to take pictures. wildlife photography is my second career after being a wildelife and fisheries managment student and i do sell some pictures, so that's why I use that, beautiful pictures, not so hot on the wallet.... so I guess I wouls say stay away from SLRs unless you are really serious... oh yeah Nikons seem to have the best lens for compact cameras.

I have a 4meg camera and now wouldn't think of buying anything that wasn't waterproof. The waterproof models produce lower quality pictures, but knowing it will work the next day is priceless.
