hi -- for some reason i have been getting alot of questions regarding what cameras and software i use ... so, i thought i would finally post the "simple solution" here in the forum... ok .. here goes ..

1. camera - i recomend the sony cybershot cameras -- set the video mode to 640x480 .. its a small camera and takes great video at that resolution and up to 48 minutes with a 1 gig memory stick .. when you record it will already be digital (so no tape necessary) ..

2. software - windows movie maker - this comes free with windows xp .. you can dump all of your movie clips from camera and stills too into movie maker and combine/cut them .. add music ... remove voice .. whatever ... and spit out a final movie of your fishing or family trips or whatever ....

3. when you do spit out the movie make 2 versions -- 1 for local playback at 640x480 this is what you want to show friends when they come over to your house and you want to show them the highest quality version ... then you want to save another version for the web at 512 kbps 320x240 .. this is what you want to use on fliesandfins.com or youtube.com or whatever ...

ok .. hope this helps everyone ... it is truly a simple solution for fish films because the camera is cheap and small .. and takes great (good enough) film and great pictures .... and windows movie maker is free! ... one tip.. when creating movies with windows movie maker .. be sure to keep saving your movie project while you are working on it .. so that in case of a computer crash or whatnot .. you won't lose all of your hard work .. have fun .. hope to see some more fish tales with videos this year .. seems as though lots of people are interested in capturing their fly fishing adventures with video ... it is fun ...and adds has added a whole new dimension to fly fishing for me ..

me two, second all that however Windows movie maker freezes on my POS computer ALOT so save save save.

Any point and shoot digi will work, although Jer, you get some great stuff withn that sony.

shaq is correct ... if i had one line of advice to give to people it would be this ...

the tools are not the point ... the content is the point ... i see lots of people in all things technical get caught up in what kind of camera, software, computer etc...... all these things are just tools and mostly the same .. whether its photo editing, video editing, website editing, software coding, database tools etc........ the most imporatn thing is THE CONTENT! all the tools are meaningless if you have bad content ... so, focus on the content first and then the tools .. and if you have good content .. you will find that you don't need all the bells and whistles of the various tools because those bells and whistles are just a distraction from the real valuabel stuff ... GOOD CONTENT ... and when speaking of fish films .. the only effects that you really need are leaping fish and good shots .... for example .. when watching 'chasing silver' or "trout bum diaries' ... what makes that content good is the CONTENT ... not some hokey fade or wipe effect ... the raw content, if good enough, is the only effects you ever need .... so .. point being ... in all things for the web .. my recommendation to people is ... focus less on the tools and more on the content .... a good analogy is this ... does it really matter what kind of pen stephen king uses to write his books ... no, of course not ... his books are good because of the quality of content .. not becasue of how nice of a pen he used .... same could be said for music ... eric clapton is not known for how nice of a guitar he has or what kind of strings he uses .. he is known for the content that he creates and the tools he uses are simply a means to an end ......

Also, some of the peripherals of the experience are good to get a shot of in a video, tying flies, some of the characters you meet on the way. I remember your vid chasing saltwater in Rhode Island I think You had a shot of somebody you had pulled over to ask directions. Very entertaining filler stuff of 4 guys stuffed into a car looking for fish. That one was great.

Sounds easy enough. I may need better directions on the editing though. Maybe a trip to GLS?
