Fly Fishing

Hi
After watching your clips of these stunning fish I really need to catch one.
So Im tempted to extend my flight and head to Maine after my Striper fishing trip,a few questions for the Maine guys-

Just how common are landlocks?

How far North of Boston will I need to drive to find some?

I am used to deep nymphing rivers at home,if I sneak a 5-6 wt in with my Salt gear will that do?

Are the areas remote,is a drift boat and guide required?

Not looking for anyones honeyholes,would just like to catch one and visit a new area.The rivers in those clips are just awesome and perhaps the scenery is drawing me as much as the fish.

Colin,

Glad to hear your interest in Maine.
And more specifically your interest in landlocked Salmon. I spend most of my summer Guiding float trips, and fishing for landlockeds in Maine.
To answer your questions...

Landlockeds are very common in Maine...However for quality river fishing you generally have to go north a bit...the upper Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers are good places for numbers of fish and good size fish. I assume you want to catch them on a river?

These areas are about 4 hrs from Boston or better. You can find them closer, but not of the same quality as the fisheries up north.

A 5 or 6 weight nine foot rod is perfect the rivers in Maine are big and it's always windy.

Some of the areas for landlockeds are remote, and a guide can be helpful but certainly isn't required. The Penobscot river has limited wading due to heavy whitewater, as well as the upper Kennebec.

June is my favorite month to fish for Landlocked Salmon, great time for dryfly fishing, think caddis.

If you will be in Maine on the weekend of June 22nd, there will be a Fly Fishing in Maine conclave meeting at Bid Eddy on the West Branch of the Penobscot. The West Branch has some of the best LL fishing in the state and will be sure to knock your socks off. All fish are natives and they fight like wild dogs. I know it will be a great time and people will be camping out for the entire weekend. The river is absolutely huge and there is plenty of water to go around. I would recommend it...I know it will be one of the highlights of my summer.

Im afraid I"ll be flying home on the 19th,would have been great to make the Clave but I cant stretch my trip any longer Sad

Oh that's crappy..well the fish will still be there earlier in the month and I'm sure I'll make a trip before the clave. If you don't mind driving a good distance north then you will be sure to hit some great landlocks. I might be able to show you some spots to hook into some good fish if you can make the drive. Either way, I hope you leave with good memories of Maine.
