I have a trip to the coast planned for the first week in April and am STOKED about chasing some reds around some grass. A little early but reports are that they are already biting in pretty good numbers. With my supplies out and ready to start tying, thought I would poll the crowds and find out what other angler's favorite redfish fly was. I've caught all my large ones on clousers and crazy charlies. Nothing fancy but who cares?

down here in south florida, I catch most of my reds on mullet patterns. Muddlers, woolheads, and Puglisis. I have caught some on merkin patterns, redfish candy, and various shrimp patterns with some copper colors in them.

Although I am, by far, NOT a widely experienced redfisherman, I was really impressed by the way the reds sought and destroyed the spoonfly that I used when fishing the bayou last October. This spoonfly was tied by the guide I used (Rich Waldner); but it consisted of a hook with an epoxy spoon (much like a spinner blade constructed using a copper wire frame and the bend of the hook). The one I used was predominantly red with a lot of embedded sparkle in the epoxy. Rich Waldner (the guide) said that he had to layer 3-5 layers of epoxy on the frame to create the fly. A small piece of HEAVY-DUTY monofilament was tied near the eye to act as a weed guard. You may be able to get some of Rich's spoonflies from the Orvis Shop in New Orleans.

My impression from the flies he showed me was that in the bayou, the reds are really attracted to a lot of sparkle and things that imitate crabs.
