I just purchased a brand new Orvis clearwater fly reel for twenty dollars off of ebay as well as a brand new orvis 5wt fly rod for 25 dollars...did I get a good deal. Both haven't even been opened yet. Iknow that they are on the lower end of the Orvis line but I am trying to get my dad into fly fishing and didn't want to blow a lot of money if he wasn't going to get into it with me and thought that if he didn't like it that I would give it to my son for his first fly rod....How did I do?

You just possibly introduced your father or son to a great sport...and for only $50. Nicely done...

Thanks. I just ruined my 6wt reel on a monster steelhead so I had to use that reel for awhile. I'll have to find him another one.

You got a good deal. I started with a Clearwater and still use it. Because of all the overhang, I primarily use a shorter rod now but the Clearwater still gets used. I think it is one of the best "first rods" out there.

Yeah I've noticed how much a pain in the butt that a 9ft rod can present in tight conditions. I will be investing in a 7ft or a little bigger hopefully very soon.
