Fly Fishing

Question for everyone,
At some point this summer, I will watch a dapper-dressed flyfisherman hook and fight a fish. Judging from the bend in the rod, the length of the fight, and all, I think to myself, "wow, must be a good fish".
Then the leviathan is brought to hand, and turns out to be a little schoolie, exhausted to near death.
Do I casually ask why the person is using a 5wt with a 6lbs tippet, killing stripers one after another, or do I as usual, go try another spot and bite my tongue?

Maybe he was one of the ultra lite tackle kind of guys. I'd stay in the hopes he hooked into something bigger for a good laugh. I saw something like that last year during the Block Island tournament. One guy was fishing Albies and Bonito with a trout rod. He hooked a nice one also. May have actually landed it with the correct gear. Hell he may have actually got to use the reel before it took all the backing and broke off at the end of it.

I think you would be better served targeting the commercial fishing industry. The impact they have on the striper fishery may be a little more substantial than the guy with the five weight.

Agree with the whippa. There are a ton of acts that go on in this world that don't seem right. It is a matter of opinion and most the time a lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge is something that can be taught. Maybe next time try to educate someone like you saw in a tactful manor. Tough to judge someone right off the cuff. Believe me I have judged too quickly and regreted it. Pick your battles. Like whip said the commercial fishing industry is the one we need to pay attention to. Support your local CCA.

maybe it's better to lead by example, like muscling in a 30"er with a stout 9wt and heavy tippet whilst fishing near the guy.
I agree I have offered advice, nicely, and not had a great reception. I also don't think undergeared fisheman are out to "kill" the fish they hook. Maybe light gear is all they have to fish with and they want to give it a try.
I just wonder what the people at Bean's are rigging these people with, I mean you can see them come to the water, wading in as though they own the place, just going where the tackle shop people suggested ( usually far from tackle-guys good spot ) decked out and just learning the sport

When those bean's qwest outfits rot down to the reel-seat perhaps they'll upgrade to a 9 wt.

When the ignorant get too close I just zip a 4/0 clouser between us. Maybe even splash the water between us with a weak forward cast......or more often than not, just pack up.

In three weeks the rush will be over and the only the briney fella's will still be at it.

I personally like the 10 wt. It performs wonderfully in those October winds at higgins beach Wink

Just go up after the action and talk to them. Chances are they are being over careful and were just wanting to land a fish and did not know that landing quick and unharmed is what we are all about. congratulate them and give them some of your knowledge. As fast as our sport is growing it would be a shame to move on and not pass forward what you have to share. Possitive criticism. They have the tools, but without help bad habbits become worse habbits.
