First of all I wanted to say hi to everyone, this is my first post. I have been reading all of the info on here and am very impressed with all of the knowledge that is being shared here. I have a question for all of the chrome chasers on here, I am in the infancy stage of planning a trip this winter up to the Salmon river for steelhead and would like to ask what weight rod, and rod action to buy. I would assume that a slow-med. rod would be about right for some roll casting, and protecting light tippets? any info would be apriecated, Todd.

I prefer a fast action tip flex rod in 9 weight, for punching flies and split shot into the wind. Not to mention a little backbone in the butt section doesn't hurt when you are trying to turn a 15+ lb fish.

Thanks Wippa, thats cool sounds like my striper rod would work than. What about lines, most guys using floating lines and weighing the tippet down? or just sinking line? I would assume that a sinking line would be harder to mend, during a drift. Rolling Eyes

I just use a floating wf line and nymph like I would for any trout. Good luck.

For SR I have an 8 weight. Whatever you pick I would go with at leat a 10' rod. As wippa said the rod needs to handle large fish. The past few years I have a good number of 30+ inch 15lbs+ chrome.

When are you planning om going? Are you getting a guide? You might want to check out some other lake Ontario tribs depending on how much time you have. Good luck and let us know how you do.

It looks like jan/ feb. is the best time. I would probably try to do the self guided thing, but I don't think it would be out of the question to hire a guide to get a feel for the fishery. ssh I'm not suposed to say anything but my wife thinks she's with child and if my calulations are correct that would put the baby here around feb. and if this one goes the way the last one went ten years ago I aint going nowhere for the last two months of it! It might wait a year. We'll see Embarassed
