Yesterday I went for the third time this month for a fishing trip to the Diemel river.
On our last trip we had arranged tickets to fish this day, the people from the village would celebrate their 925th anniversary on the 16th so it would be impossible to get tickets then.
To buy tickets in advance imposed a certain risks because it could rain in the mean time and fishing a flooding river would be impossible.
So during the week I checked flows through the online service that displayed the flows from the local measuring station..
To my dismay the levels kept creeping up daily without the presence of rainfall, obviously the upstream dam was releasing loads of water.
On Sunday the levels where just receding slowly from a peak but it was still way to high to fish properly.
Since we had paid for the license we went ahead anyway and hoped for a faster decline of the flows.
In the past we had seen that the river could rise from normal level to flooding stage within two hours time so the reverse would also be possible especially since last week had not seen any significant rainfall.

When we arrived at the river our worst fears became reality, the river was high and brown.
It was difficult to wade in the strong flow and the reduced visibility obscured all the major obstacles where a wader could trip over.
Although insects where in the air there was absolutely no rising fish to be seen.
The only time a trout made its presence know was by attacking my strike indicator twice.
A quick change to a dry fly remained utterly fruitless.
After a couple of hours fishing the only trout of the day came on a very deep fished caddis nymph.
In the afternoon we called it quits, it was almost impossible to fish the river.
We did not believe anymore that the river would drop so going on fishing was just a waste of time.
The plan was to get something to eat and go home but since the festivities where going on in the village our access road to the restaurant was closed during the remainder of the day.
Instead we had to go another route and while we where driving we asked ourselves if it would be wiser to check out the local countryside for new fishing haunts instead of going straight home.
In the end we opted for a little sightseeing trip.

I had been in the general area before and when I saw a familiar village name on our detour route I told Harry we should go there and visit a restaurant that also sold tickets for the nearby river.
We drove through a nice valley with a lovely small stream running thought it.
I had seen the name of the stream in one of the German forums I frequented and always wondered where it was located, now I knew.

After lunch we visited other sections of the river we fished until we came to the large reservoir where our river originated from.
Although the reservoir was well filled we still pondered why they would release so much water.
Near the border with Hessen
When we where driving on the highway back home we came across a wide valley bridge that was named after a small local river we had interest in.
A little stream discovered on the way home.
The decision to take the first exit was quickly taken and soon we where standing on a bridge overlooking a very interesting small stream.
Rising fish in the distance confirmed that this place would be something that deserved further investigation.
A second spot on the same little river, too bad it was located directly beneath the approach of a nearby airport.
After visiting another spot on the same stream it was time to finally go home.
The fishing was lousy on this day but being in good company with friends and finding new places to fish made the trip well worth the effort and time.

Yep, it is nice Chris but what I have figured by now
NY state might also be very pretty.
Never been there though but the reports on the net
suggest some fine fishing to be had there.
