Hi, I seem to get alot of questions about flies from people .. all different kinds of flies for all different fish ... and, I suppose .. I am always asking alot of questions about flies for all different fish. Like anything else, there is obviously an almost limitless possible options of any fly patterns for a species of fish .. and some get pretty wild and excotic and as they say some are made more for fly fisherman than fish. So for simplicity sake, and assuming that someone was not a veteran tarpon fly fisherman .. what would people here recommend as some "go to" tarpon fly patterns?
I am kinda partial to something with a spun dear hair type head (kind of like a big muddler minnow) that pushes water up top and a back end of the fly that has alot of movement ... ostrich herl or even featherwing type back ..... I have never had that much luck on the bunny patterns or the toads .. but then again, i haven't caught that many tarpon ... by the way .. what is a "toad" .. just a name? why toad? any significance or just because? ... Anyway, I guess my go to patterns for what it's worth would be .. .. well, I don't really have a go-to pattern ... that's why I am posting this .. I typically just "go to" my box and pull out whatever looks like a tarpon fly ... and since i have only caught a couple tarpon .. my go to fly was the "muddler looking thing" .. but it was my friend ed's fly that he tied and i only had one .. and now i have none .. hence, i don't really have a clue what a go to tarpon fly is for me ... any suggestions?
Down here in Naples, the guides all have their favorites. Many of the guides like a black and purple some like the Toad-type style some like a Stu Apte standard tie like a Cockroach or a Whistler.
Personally, I always go with the guide's suggestions when I'm out after big Tarpon....then, if we have successs, I'll transform the large patterns we used into small "Trail" versions for the Baby Tarpon.
