|
|
Aloha, the past few weeks ending february the tides have not been favorable with strong gusty tradewinds however, there have been a few number of nice sized 4 to 6 lbs bonefish. This 11lbs bonefish pictured was one that couldn't resist one of my newly tied flies. She took the fly 15ft away from the rod tip then proceeded to rip off 220 yards of gel-spun backing before doing a 180 degree turn and came straight back at me for another 100 yards then turned around and made another 60 yard run before tiring. This fish was tagged with tag #5438 of the O'io (bonefish) Tagging Program before gently releasing it back to the ocean. Hopefully, conditions will get back to normal soon.
Until then, Malama Pono & Ahui Ho

Holy Smack ! I`ve never fished for bonefish before or even seen them in real life, seen them in videos and on the forum, but never seen anything that size, just out of my curiosity, how big do they get? anyone has any idea? |

I do a little bonefishing. If you get one over 9-10 pounds that's a serious fish. I forget what the record is around 20 pounds I think? Awesome fish. That's a great picture |

Aloha Troutbone, the average size Bonefish in Hawaii is between 4 to 9lbs. with many days they're shots at 10lbs or larger bones on the fly. The largest Bonefish recorded was 19lbs. caught in South Africa prior to that it was an 18.4lbs bone that was caught in Hawaii. I personally, know of many bones caught, that were over 24lbs. but they were caught by bottom fishermen in very deep water.
Once you hook one of these Hawaiian Bones you will be HOOKED for life. They are an Awesome Fish! |

| Awesome fish! Are you able to catch bonefish all year in Hawaii? Is it all wade-able water? I am looking for a flyfishing vacation and bonefishing in Hawaii is an option I'm looking at. |

| I have tried fishing for bonefish on Kauai; no luck. I was told they are only on the flats on Oahu; that the other islands have too steep dropoffs and too much coral reefs for the bonefish. But I haven't tried for them on any other island yet. |
