My friend Angelo invited me to go with him on a guided trip with Aron Blaisdell, so of course I dropped everything and tagged along. The weather here as been unusual for the first week of April. Cold fronts, wind, and dirty water made the fishing conditions unpredictable, and the chill in the air as we left the dock made us all think twice about the 30 minute run at 40mph. Hoods up, jackets on, we arrived at a good looking piece of shoreline nicely tucked away in the shade. Angelo jumped on the front of the boat and began casting. Because of the stained water, we were throwing our arms off as sight fishing was more or less out of the question. As Angelo pounded away, I followed him up from the back of the boat with a plug to try to locate a fish or two. Fifteen minutes into it Angelo was into a nice little snook. This wasn't just any little snook, this fish gave us hope. He was sent by the fishing gods to let us know that even though the conditions were not ideal, there were hungry fish out there. As we moved on, I had a nice swirl on my topwater plug. I pulled the plug away and pointed out the spot to Angelo. Wham, the fish took his fly and the tug of war was on. First redfish in the boat, and Angelo's first red on the fly! The day continued, and warmed up nicely, and we both got a couple of snook. Then it was my turn to tangle with a red, which ended up being over 6lbs. Well we both had a snook or two and a redfish, all we needed was a tarpon to complete the grand slam. We decided to do some recon and spent the majority of the afternoon searching some of Everglades National Park's bays for a layed up tarpon. Unfortunately the unusual conditions have stalled the migration, and there were none to be found. Oh well maybe in another week or two. I'll let you know when they show!
For those of you who have not had a chance to catch redfish on the fly, make sure you catch a couple of them before your time is up as these fish are something else.
jer should be in the Miami area soon and might be able to scoot down to Islemorada to fish a day or two 4/10-14. Hope you may be free then also Bones on the fly..........
