Fly Fishing

Finally a chance to do my own physical therapy, memorial day weekend I manage to find myself up in Denmark with a few friends, this was my first chance to get out and into the water after sustaining injuries to my left legs from multiple gunshot wounds in Iraq, knowing that a metal rod in the leg and cold water usually don't go hand in hand, it was just a chance to get out into nature and do my own kind of physical therapy, we were there to also field test our new line of fly rod the Black Forest Series from Team Caddis what better way to do it then to go after Seatrout and the point is to just get out and do some Fly fishing.

It took us roughly about 7 hours to get to a town call Velje near Fynn island, as I was told and inform by some of my Danish friends that it might not be a bad place to try, I manage to squeeze into my neoprene wader as the water seem to look cold still, this not just about catching some fish, but I was more nervous about my stability in the water as I am still using crutches to balance myself, it seems that during the operation on my leg and the percentage of the bone missing from the shock of the bullet and as it exited our my leg, took some large chunk with it as I had bone from donors to help with the healing and as it turn out my left leg is just a tad shorter then my right leg, so it was more of trying to balance then anything for my ideal of therapy in the water.

I carefully got into the water, very rocky bottom and with hardly any muscle strength to prevent from spraining or twisting my left ankle it was quite painful, but after a few cast, I was rewarded with my First Sea trout and another and another, what a first day to remember. we were going to be there for only a few days, and thinking to myself if the next days are like this then the pain was worth it.

The next few days we had caught some and lost some, as I understand it that the Garfish( Horn Pike) in the Sea are of a nuisance to most fishermen I have never caight any, and this was the time of year for them to show up near the shores, so the next day I was intent on catching these species as it would be another check off my list of sea going fish, and after trial and errors in learning the best ways to catch these fish I manage to find the deadly tactics on them, it was game on after that, little did I realized these little guys will fight to the last minute, and they were addicting to fish for on light tackles.

The last day of the trip we manage to find a small canal that we took notice a few days ago that there were people fishing in it, so we tried our luck and caught some fresh water fish, Yellow Perch, but all in all I had a great time, it was a therapy that I think I need to to do more often to bad most doctors and medical specialist don't see how we fly fishermen see things, but the scars on my lower left leg will always remind me of the time I took it upon myself to do my kind of therapy and a reminder that fishing alone won't heal the wounds but will surely help you forget it easily.

Very nice, you did pretty well in Denmark as I see.
I never caught one of those Garfish, we usually fish
earlier to avoid them.
Still garfish are blast on the flyrod, I guess they jump like crazy.

Must be pretty tough moving about on those stones down there
with an injury.
Even in you are in good shape walking over those stones is tough.

Yeah, I had to grind my teeth and groan and moan inside a few times, but it was great fishing up there.

The Garfish, now I got an addiction for them, they might not be big but the fight they put up on a 4WT was fantastic, the jellyfish was kind of creepy as I had one go between my leg that kind of made me hop and skip a little, and luckily i was far out enough in the water where no one heard me squeal for a second.. Laughing
