So, i am going to be in Ft. Otis on Cape cod, on July 14-17th, Was wondering if anyone lives near there and would like to take a Carolina boy Fishing!!, or maybe just tell me about a few places nearby.
I have a new 9 wt to try out and also what flies should i whip up for July on cape cod?

Hey,
You might want to start by going to one of the most famous fishing spots on the cape .. "The Cape Cod Canal" - It is 17 miles long and 500 feet wide. It connects cape cod bay with buzzards bay. I don't think its that far of a drive Falmouth. Do a google on "Cape Cod Canal" and you will find plenty of great info. I have many friends who fish this and its a pretty cool experience as you will truly get a taste of new england fishing/fly fishing and get a good chance at a fish. No cars are allowed on the canal .. only bicycles. So people either walk and fish or ride bikes and fish. You should give this a try ... its a good bet if you only have one day. Get there early (or later in the day) as striped bass fishing tends to be better in lower light conditions ... If you could rent a bicycle (which wouldn't be hard to do on the cape) that would be ideal .. if not, no big deal. Here is, more or less, a simple solution to what you want to do.
1. floating or intermediate line is good
2. 9 weight is perfect
3. definately consider a stripping basket so that your fly line doesn't get all tangled in rocks/seaweed etc.
4. keep fly selection simple .. white deceiver patterns, brown/white or chartreuse/white clouser minnows and a couple gurglers should suffice.
6. when you get there look for fish. often striped bass will be in schools and when they are chasing bait on the surface they make a pretty impressive appearance. you wouldn't be able to miss them.
7. also, look and watch others. look for guys fishing plugs and/or flies and observe and don't ask questions ... people are generally very helpful
8. this is a good place to start and you will definately meet plenty of fisherman and find people who will help you from there and perhaps even give you some tips on some other spots. but, you may not even need any other spots.

There are other guys from the cape on this site and/or who fish the cape frequently who may be able to offer some other tips and general advise on where to look without giving away any sensitive locations. Good luck, have fun .. oh ya, forgot to mention tippet/leader .. you can fish straight 15 or 20 pound fluorocarbon 7-9 feet in length. Good luck!

So i went digging through my hoards of tying materials and realized i dont have ANYMORE Saddle hackles for decievers, so i went with bucktail and Crimped Nylon. Think these will work? They are approx.. 4-5 inches long.(im going to try to post a few pics, so if they arent here then i have failed you)
Materials:
-Mustad 34007, 1/0 hook
-210 denier thread
-10 inch long crimped Nylon (pink and lime) Cut to length
-Bucktail (white)
-Stick on dome eyes (unknown brand) Applied with Superglue then dipped in Softex
-Holographic Silver Saltwater Flashabou
And that's it!!! When I head up North Next week i will let yall know how/if they worked!

I am sure that I am not the only one who would like to see those flies you tied ... You did it right (kinda) .. you have to
1. click on Img so that you see this [img] BEFORE your links
2. post the link to a photo
3. then close the tags so that you see this [/img] after the links
The problem with your pics was that they were on myspace and required a person and/or a system to be logged into myspace to see the pics... So, try this ---
1. Go to photobucket.com - its free and many guys use it to host photos that they share on forums
2. Try doing 1-3 above with links to photos on photobucket.com
3. If that's too much - just email the photos to staff@fliesandfins.com and we can help you get them up.
I'm a cape codder but from a different area of the cape so I'll try to be as helpful as I can. Falmouth is a cool area to fish because of its' proximity to the vineyard. As the summer warms bluefish and bonito will begin to hang out there more and more. Blues are already there and bonito and albies will show up in august. All the flies above and the rods and lines listed are good choices. Go to the local tackle shops and buy something and they'll give you some good spots to start. Early in the morning and at night are best. Enjoy!
3 days and counting.. im getting to the point where i cant sleep very well at nights...The last striper i caught was on Christmas day 2001 down here on the OBX. so i am getting anxious because this is my first fishing trip out of state ever. I just hope the weather cooperates a little so its not a bust!! This will be my last post until i return probably. Wish me luck.
