Hello to you all,
I haven't posted much, to be honest just one thing, but nevertheless I am a daily visitor to this site.
Last february my buddies and I headed out on a fishing trip to the Corn Islands. We decided to check out far away places in order to find some pristine waters and the chance of connecting to bonefish or tarpon. We didn't want to go to the familliar places like Belize or Mexico, we wanted to go far from the beaten track and make or break the adventure.
After searching the web and microscoping google earth we decided on 2 small islands of the coast of Nicaragua called the Corn Islands.
After 36 hours of travel we arrived on Little Corn Island, a beautifull place with just 300 inhabitants and a bunch of "hostel/Cabina's" for rent. Arround the island were several smaller flats and deeper inner reef spots. The whole location, moon phase and surrounding were perfect. The locals knew about bonefish and we thought we arrived in fishermans paradise. There was just one minor glitch in the whole adventure. Even though it was mid dry season, the nica's had never seen such a rainy and windy dryperiod in years, and so did the fish. Days with rain we spend sitting on the porch drinking beer and rum waiting for the sunny days. The sunny days we spend wading over murky flats and hoping for the bones to return.....they never did.
The trip endend in a fishing disaster with just 3 bones landend and a handfull of hard earned fish. But the memories are priceless, the place is perfect and I'll do a re-match any time.
I made a small compilation of the trip and wanted to show you guys the other side of fishing trips. My good buddy described it perfectly during the trip: "Backpacking for Bones: you win some, you loose some"
My apologies for the lack of subtitles but you'll understand the universal language of flyfishing.
That is pretty sweet that you made it down there. Too bad the conditions weren't ideal, but that is all too common in saltwater fly fishing. You can't plan the weather unfortunately. Interesting how you went about finding the corn islands as I did the exact same thing. I never did make it down there but a few years ago did a bunch of research on google earth etc. and thought it would be an awesome spot to check out. It has been on my list ever since, but haven't made it yet. Cool to hear that it was a worthwhile destination. Sounds like the amount of travel time was huge, but that is often the case if you want to fish more off the beaten path destinations these days. Thanks for sharing!
