| I have a St. Croix 8wt Lengend Ultra that is awesome and they are reasonably priced. Redington is another really good well priced rod. Also the Sage Xi2 models are marked half off in a a lot of places due to the Xi3 coming out. |

| Oops I forgot reels. But Bauer, Ross, and Lamson are all good choices. I personally like Bauer. |

Patrick,
I encourage you to look closely at the Temple Forks Outfitter (TFO) Lefty Kreh TiCR and TiCrX series rods in an 8 weight. TFO is routinely noted as great values and excellent performers. Plus, they come with a lifetime guarantee against breakage ... even if you slam the car door on the rod tip! The TiCr retails for $209.95 for the 4 piece, 9 ft. 8 weight and itt comes with a fighting butt. The TiCrX is a bit higher.
A longstanding favorite for a value reel is the Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor reel. The IV retails for $149 and spools for $79.
As a beginner, I have now bought two TFO rods ... the latest is the TiCr in an 8 weight. I throw it very well!
Tight lines! |

| I second the motion on the TFO rods. They are inexpensive and do their job very well. I have more than a dozen of them for salt and fresh, big and small flies. Both the TiCr and TiCrX are great rods but my new favorites are the 2 Mini-Mags in 6-8wt and 8-10wt, especially for kayak fishing. Both are 8', 3 piece rods. You can throw a fly a mile right on target with the right line and I even use them when not in the kayak. You can't go wrong with TFO and you can put more money into a good reel (I like Waterworks-Lamson Litespeed). |
