yo - waterwhippa, headrush, mike and louie...we are gonna have a blast in RI next weekend....I got this email from Dan-L (who lives down there)
Well dude,
Here is the report I have been waiting to read... the fishing is hot, no
word on big bass in the report, but I have friends catching nice fish up to
37 inches so far....I am heading to Mexico on Friday, but recommend a trip
down as soon as possible. The next 2 weeks will be hot.
And to top it off the cinder worms are hatching, man this is early.... I am
pumped for RI fishing more than the trip to Mexico right now. I will call
you as soon as I get back and see if we can plan a couple days on the water.
Fishing report
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, May 6, 2005
Fishing is fantastic when you find the right spot, and Sunday's new moon
should make the action even faster as cinder-worm draw more fish into the
state's salt ponds.
BAY
Newport Harbor is loaded with squid and herring, said Sam Toland of Sam's
Bait & Tackle. If you're going to jig for squid, Toland advises that you
bring another rod with a Sabiki rig to catch herring. "I've never seen so
many herring," he said.
With bait so abundant, big bass could arrive by the weekend.
There are plenty of smaller bass throughout the Bay, said charterboat
skipper Ed Hughes. Mount Hope bay is loaded with schoolies, too, said John
Viveiros of Main Bait & Tackle in Fall River. The Seekonk and Providence
rivers are especially hot. David Henault of Ocean State Tackle said anglers
have been catching a lot of fish on 4-inch soft-plastic shad at the
Henderson Bridge and Hurricane Barrier. Ten-year-old Michael Paridis was
fishing for stripers on the Seekonk this week when he caught a trophy
3.12-pound smallmouth bass.
Tautog are biting from Castle Hill to Tiverton, said Toland. Steve Niles
caught an 8-pound, 12-ounce blackfish this week, Viveiros said. He
recommends fishing at Stone Bridge and the railroad trestle in Tiverton.
BEACHES AND SALT PONDS
Quonochontaug Pond was filled with squid, and striped bass were feeding on
them yesterday morning, according to Don Cameron of Captain Don's Bait &
Tackle. Peter Konicki was catching keepers on 18-inch red tubes tipped with
clam worms near the rocks at the back of the pond. Bass have been biting in
Cemetery Cove on the Pawcatuck River, too.
Ninigret Pond came alive Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. when cinder worms staged
a huge emergence, said Ron Mouchon of Breachway Bait & Tackle. With low
tides during the afternoons next week, striper fishing should be excellent
on all of the state's salt ponds and tidal streams. In the morning, stripers
are taking small poppers.
"Matunuck is red hot with school bass, with some fish to about 25 inches,"
writes Bill "Eelman" Nolan in an e-mail. "On one outing, I had 68- plus fish
in one afternoon. So the fishing is just stellar! I will switch to night
fishing in about a week or so."
The striper bite has been excellent at the West Wall in Jerusalem, said Al
Conti of Snug Harbor Marina. Bob Neilson of Wildwood Outfitters writes: "A
friend and I went on Wednesday night and we caught loads of schoolies on the
wall with Cocahoe Minnows and larger schoolies up to 22 inches on
bunker-colored Swim Hhad. Also there were at least 30 fisherman on the wall,
all having great luck."
Flounder are biting in Ninigret and Point Judith Ponds. Conti said the bite
is better than it has been in two years.
Some fluke were biting at Green Hill early this week, Mouchon said.
Tautog still haven't appeared at the breachways.
OFFSHORE
Partyboat fishing is going through some ups and downs, according to the
skippers of the Frances Fleet out of Galilee. "The weather over the last
week and a half was not conducive to good fishing," said Capt. Frank Blount.
"We just need a break from the windy weather to get out there and find the
fish." Fluke fishing begins tomorrow.
"Our offshore trips to Stellwagen Bank are still producing some nice fish,"
Blount said. "This past weekend's trip was a bit slower than they have been
but again the weather played a big part in that. There have been lots of
cod, plenty of haddock and even wolfish on recent trips. Although we have
not been to George's Bank yet, reports are that fishing is finally turning
on out there."
Quote of the week comes from Al Conti: "Cod fishing is just cod wishing."
FRESHWATER
"The Wood River is really hot," writes Ed Lombardo. "The water temperature
is still holding at around 52 to 53 degrees and the flow is almost perfect
for a nice drag-free float. The hatches of Black Quills, Mahogany Duns, and
both tan and dark brown Caddis have been the heaviest in years."
Rainbow trout and brown trout have been biting floating nightcrawlers on
Olney Pond in Lincoln, according to David Henault.
Also, Linda Samuelian of Providence said an 8 1/2 carp was taken on Olney
Pond, according to Bob Neilson.
Worden Pond in South Kingstown is producing bass and pike, Neilson said. The
hot lure is an artificial mouse.
I didn't mean a 37 inch striper was not big!!! Just that the fishing report didn't mention any big fish being caught. It said keepers were being caught in Quanny, but no size given. Believe me, a 37 inch fish is an awesome catch with a fly rod.
Make sure to hit Ninigret Pond at the beginning or end of low tide. That is when the cinder worms will be coming out of the mud. You know where to go.

Any idea where in Mexico Dan-L is headed? I would like to catch up with him next week. I know Mexico is a big place but everyone seems to go to the same place this time of year.
